Description: A casual dining experience in an 18th century inn. Savoury pies, made on the premises from local ingredients, are the speciality with light lunches, salads and snacks also available. A host of real ales, craft beers, traditional ciders and fine wines juggle for position on the bar for diners and drinkers alike.

OK, given there is a reference to "pie" in just about every recent review, you could be excused for thinking that it's all about the pies. But there is more to this place than pies.

Firstly there is a nice area outside up front so you can have a drink and watch the world go by. Good range of beers (had a decent stout the name of which escapes me - Porterhouse?). Better still they allow dogs inside so took them with us when we went inside to eat. And yes we did all eat pies (which were excellent), but there is a far wider menu which looked good.

Small downside was that the barstaff/waiting staff, while charming, were being run ragged. The chap who served us behind the bar also appeared to doubling up as a waiter. Perhaps they were short staffed - but that did not detract from the overall experience. Will definitely be back on our next visit to the town.

Good range of pies on the menu from the classics to the more imaginative and served with a choice of sides. All pies were puff pasty (fine by me but not for every one). Prompt service and a good range of beers (local ones included) to go with it. Slightly annoying that we were told certain pies were running when we checked in but the barman said there was no need to order in advance as there were plenty, then to be told your choice has sold out when you order at the table. Minor issue as the second choice was really good anyway.

Visited on Easter Saturday early lunchtime. Pub was quiet at noon but filled up really fast. Barman friendly and very knowledgeable about menu. Food arrived in an acceptable timescale and was of high quality for the money. Chicken, leek and perl las pie was lovely as was chive mash and Mediterranean vegetables. My son's steak and ale pie from the children's menu disappeared at the speed of light! Waitress quiet but friendly and efficient. Very nice dining experience. Would recommend.

This was by far the best pies we’ve ever had, (chicken & leek with horseradish mash and lovely spicy red cabbage). Staff were welcoming with great sense of humour. Ales were superb with great local selection. Also dog friendly which is always good to see.
Not sure what the reviewer dated 030318 wanted or expected, but maybe he should have gone to the local supermarket for a Fray & Bentos! Because he obviously doesn’t know a good pie when he sees one!
