“Delightful cottage in super location with great owner.”
Reviewed 22 November 2016 for a stay in October 2016

The delightful Hope Cottage was my home for a week in October and I greatly enjoyed the entire experience. The location could not be better--very, very close to the castle and its surrounding lush and extensive grounds. No car is necessary, as one can see the town on foot while there are connections as needed by train, coach, and local bus.
The cottage itself is a work of art, labor, and love. Patsi has totally rehabilitated the former bakery to provide comfortable holiday accommodation with many appealing features: underfloor heating, Victorian fireplace surrounds and picture rails, stained glass, and a terrific sound system for relaxing and listening to the music of your choice. The bed is very comfortable and the bathroom is super.
The owner is great! We had good beforehand communication, she left fruit and special coffee for me, and she addressed the one and only problem very quickly.
(The washing machine failed and she had it replaced by a new unit within two hours.)
Without reservation, I can highly recommend Hope Cottage to all. Indeed, I hope to return in the future myself..

“Our Best Trip to England - Ever”
Reviewed 15 November 2016 for a stay in September 2016

We have been to the U.K. over a dozen times. Most of the time we frantically zoom around the country gawking at everything we see. This time we went to one place and spent the entire week. It was exquisite! Patsie, the owner, had just renovated the cottage. It is quaint and cozy but high tech at the same time. Internet, B&O stereo and TV, washer, and fully renovated bath including tub and separate shower. A couple blocks from the castle and about the same to the wonderful local pub, The Foresters Arms. A 10-minute walk takes you through the castle park and into downtown. Lots of shopping and great restaurants. Colchester is the oldest city in Great Britain. At the end of the block is a Roman wall over 2,000 years old! While the cottage is on a quiet residential street the night life downtown includes a music scene, late night restaurants, and dance clubs. We loved it and highly recommend it if you want a truly memorable taste of England!

“Superb rental accommodation in Colchester”
Reviewed 20 August 2015 for a stay in August 2015

My wife and I, my daughter and infant grandson stayed at Hope Cottage for 6 nights. The cottage was very well decorated, very clean, and maintained in excellent order. The location is convenient and quiet, very close to the town centre, to the Castle park, and it enjoys a residential on-street parking permit. Ideal for 2 persons. Looking forward to revisiting Hope Cottage at some point in the future.

“Comfort with Character”

Tucked away in a quiet street by the castle, I found Hope Cottage to be an excellent base to explore Colchester and Constable Country.
A plump comfy bed, lots of quirky and Victorian features, it was a pleasure to come back and relax after a day out and about. I particularly like the stained glass in the windows.
The kitchen has all you need, and it was nice to be welcomed with both flowers and chocolate chip cookies.
I couldn't recommend Hope Cottage more, the perfect antidote to bland hotel suites, and encompasses much of the charm of the town.

“Grubby”
Reviewed 14 September 2014 for a stay in July 2014

Arrived as scheduled and expected to gain access to the cottage according to the instructions the owner had emailed. The property was locked even though we had arrived exactly at the time we had given the owner a couple of days beforehand. Our instructions included contact details for a neighbour. After knocking and speaking to this contact and walking up and down Castle Road a couple of times to find the owner, it began to transpire that we were not expected until the following day. However, our booking clearly stated that we were there on the correct da y. The Cottage was not ready. The owner was hugely apologetic and she and her colleague promised to have the cottage ready within an hour. We decamped to the very nice pub( the Forresters) at the end of the road. After a little over an hour, we returned to find the preparations complete.
Hope Cottage is a charming property kitted out with top of the range appliances and high end furnishings, crockery etc. unfortunately, most of these are the worse for wear and I found the property to be dingy and grubby. The sofas were covered with animal hair and both the kitchen and bathroom had a build up of grime that had accumulated over some time and cannot be attributed to a hurried clean due to the confusion over our arrival date. The top of the fridge was filthy, and there was dust and cobwebs everywhere. I spent over 2 hours hoovering, cleaning surfaces and dusting before I could feel comfortable. I would recommend the owner takes the time to organise a deep clean to bring the cottage up to an acceptable standard. The oven did not work, the cold water tap in the bath was extremely difficult to turn on and off and dripped most of the time. It was extremely hot weather at the time of our stay and only one tiny fan was provided, which we had to move around as we moved from room to room. I would have brought up these matters with the owner, had she been in contact during or after our stay.

Management Response
5 Jul 2015
It is true and I apologise for the confusion regarding the arrival date, it is the first time that this has happened. We clearly got off on the wrong footing, as the rest of this review is a mystery to me. First of all, it is important to mention that at no time did the reviewer try to contact us regarding the problems they had during their stay. The first we knew about these problems were as we read this review. Despite having little time to prepare the cottage, it was fully cleaned. All appliances were cleaned and in working order. The presence of animal hair is highly improbable as we have always had a policy of not accepting pets in the property. I add that in 15 years this is the first negative feedback we have received regarding cleanliness. I suggest that any guest contact the owner immediately should they experience such conditions in future holidays. Most owners would be more than happy to rectify any problems immediately rather than read about them in a review at a later date.
