The surroundings of the Chapel are the responsibility of the council. The interior is fascinating and all our reviews are enthusiastic. Please don't judge the chapel by things of our control.

An interesting building well worth a tidy up. There are too many weeds. The chapel was not open when we visited, but they do hold services there. The chapel has been a prison and other things in its history. Chapels on bridges are few and far between.

There is a book available telling the fascinating story of this building from Hamby;'s High Street R'ham or the Visitor centre near the Minster in town centre, "The Chapel on the Bridge - Legacy of an Archbishop" by Margaret Jackson

Whilst I knew it would not be open to visit, whilst in the Town I was keen to see the Chapel, reputedly one of only four left in the country. Built in 1483 and Grade One listed, it is an impressive structure, standing beside the original bridge over the River Don, with the current road/traffic bridge running parallel.

With a complicated and fascinating history, the Chapel of Our Lady is one of the most interesting buildings in Rotherham. Open on several occasions throughout the year and with a team of Friends who give presentations and guided visits to the cellar jail cells, this is well worth a visit.
