I attended a party at The George - it is an old coaching hotel which retains all its original character - the service is excellent and food matches what your expectations would be of this high end hotel

We called in for a light lunch midweek. There was an excellent range of sandwiches and other food, the food arrived quickly and was well prepared, filling and delicious. Staff were extremely helpful and friendly throughout. Coffee nearly £4 for an ordinary cup, sandwiches £9 each but a good experience and well worth a visit. Very popular.

We had a one night stay after Christmas. The building is old and full of character, but what made it for me were the stunning Christmas decorations which transported me into winter wonderland. The room was comfortable and overlooked the courtyard. The breakfast, served in the beautifully decorated Garden Room, was delicious. It is a pricy hotel, but judging by its popularity this doesn't put people off coming!

A massive thank you to the George for making our Christmas a wonderful experience. The inn is beautiful and is decorated tastefully at Christmas. It is clean and the food is really good. The staff work really hard over Christmas and were friendly, helpful and polite. Hopefully see you again next year!

Having read the TA responses of the general manager to negative reviews it is with a feeling of wasting my time to write this, but hopefully it will help other would be guests.
The room rate of £230 pn including early morning tea (no hospitality tray in the rooms) and breakfast immediately raises expectations, and we were very much looking forward to our stay, expecting to be pampered.
We found it rather strange on arrival that there seems to be mature 'managers' standing on guard in the entrance, watching comings and goings. Very uncomfortable; are they policing the guests or just don't trust the staff? Who are largely young, enthusiastic, work hard and are pleasant and calm in extremely busy conditions. We found it odd that there were so many manager types around, who did not seem to contribute much to smooth running or guest satisfaction. Micro management rarely results in improved staff productivity. On one occasion, a young waitress carrying a heavily loaded tea tray had to negotiate around the manager person standing watching events.
The room we had was spacious, super clean and the bathroom modern, but the window seemed to be over a kitchen extractor and so the bathroom smelled of cooking. Still, we weren't staying in the bathroom. The bed was large and comfortable, as were the pillows.
Breakfast in the Garden Room was nice, with fresh fruits, juices, cereals of all kinds a good choice of cooked items to order and plentiful tea, coffee and toast and a good start to the day.
Other than the relative calm of breakfast time, we found the whole place was rammed for the duration of our stay. Nowhere to sit quietly, have a drink or a cup of tea, or read a book. It was near impossible to get a table in the lounge or the bar, after late morning for when one became vacant it was grabbed. Because there is no hospitality tray in the rooms, any cups of tea had to be taken in the lounge or bar (at a ridiculous price of £9+ for a pot for two), and it was so difficult to get even a little table for two.
The hotel seems to want to cater to people coming in for drinks/lunch/afternoon tea, but in doing this residents take a back seat. We had to ask, after searching around, if we could be accommodated in the bar for a pre dinner drink, which we eventually were, but this took about 20 minutes and we had to lurk around in the lobby. Very uncomfortable for guests, and greedy of the hotel to allow this to happen to the detriment of residents. On our last day, a note went up on the London room door (I think this is used for dining functions) that said "Residents Lounge". Still only dining tables and chairs in there, not exactly a lounge but better than being in a scrum in the bar. Also, on the same evening some "reserved for residents" notes went on some of the lounge tables. Too late for us I'm afraid.
The Oak dining room is nicely done out, but the food isn't exactly fine dining and it is very expensive for what it is. The vegetables are charged as an extra. Fine. But the waiter brings them out, and then when served, they are taken away rather than be left for diners to have more. I was hungry after our meal and am not a big eater. The gnocci vegetarian option was small, and with a sauce that tasted of mayonnaise.
The tables and chairs in the Oak room do not accommodate anyone with long legs; my 6'3 in proportion partner could not sit up to the table, and although the young man 'found' another lower chair from somewhere else, it was embarrassing to say the least to be having chairs taken in and out. I did point this out the following day to one of the many managers in the hotel and an apology was given but clearly the problem had not been passed on so that avoiding action could be taken for anyone over 6'3 who wished to dine there. We ate there only once, preferring to walk to restaurants in Stamford for some lovely meals.
We were looking forward to this break. We won't return to The George.
