Review of Ocean Beauty
2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 20 Sept 2010
We booked just over two weeks at the Ocean Beauty and we left after two nights. Whilst the rooms are ok and the hotel's clean, it doesn't have a bar or restaurant on the premises and the private beach is accessed down a small flight of steps, through a door in the wall. With no restaurant dinner is a fixed, unseen menu and served either outside your room or on the beach which we found rather unsociable and restrictive. The hotel's experimenting with an open bar at present: this means that they provide some low quality spirits and a range of soft drinks and mixers in the fridge in the reception area. It might be free but I'd much rather pay for a barman to mix me a good cocktail than help myself to bad quality spirits for nothing. Food here is nothing to get excited about: it's average and there's no choice for dinner. Overall our view was that this definitely isn't a luxury boutique hotel and certainly not the 4 star that it bills itself as and some of the photos taken of the hotel are overly flattering. That said the staff are pleasant and helpful enough. Our recommendation would be to go to competitors who are in a similar price bracket: try Coin de Mire or Le Sakoa. Ocean Beauty isn't good value for money and we felt that the owners and managers just didn't really understand the type if customers they were trying to attract. The beaches are much better at Trou Aux Biches and Pereybere doesn't have much going for it. It was the wrong choice on our part. Given that we paid up front we moved to their sister hotel Ocean Villas for the remainder of our stay and staff were very helpful in assisting that move.

Ocean Beauty is a small boutique hotel. First of all, do not come here if you are a package holiday, all inclusive pleb that cannot think for themselves.

Ocean Beauty is a serene place of calm and relaxation. It is many miles from the airport and it takes around an hour and a half to get here from the airport. But that is one of the reasons we chose to come here. You don't find beautifull places away from the masses without getting off the beaten track slightly!

We came to ocean beauty to get married and could not have chosen a more perfect and serene place to exchange our vows. All the staff are very friendly and helpfull but not intrusive of your privacy or intamacy. Joelle and Alexandra dealt with all the details leading up to and on the big day, making the day perfect for us. We didn't need to worry about anything. Just relax and enjoy our big day in paradise.

Right from arrival, you are felt welcome and you get a very personal service. We chose to come in April/May because it was off season. The whole island is quieter, more relaxed, cooler and less humid (but still sunny and warm) and out of the rainy season. It is the perfect time of year to visit Mauritius and made Ocean Beauty even more intimate as it was only half full.

It is worth booking a suite as they are lovely. We booked a garden suite but could still see the sea through the tropical garden. They have managed to create a very relaxing atmosphere here. With the coi carp pond, the Bose sound system playing chilled background music (you can even switch it on in your bathroom and the underwater speakers in the pool are really cool) and flowers and candles on arrival and special occiasions are really nice.

Other great points are: free wifi, free computer to use Internet, free bar, private dining on the beach or your own terrace every other night and every breakfast.

Meals at the hotel only on alternate nights is great because you can go out to experience the local restaurants and are not tied to being stuck in a hotel every night. The food at the hotel is, however excellent.

As we'd booked over a week in a suite, we got the love at 1st sight package added for free. Which meant more pampering: massages on the beach, private boats to go snorkelling, sunset boat trip (although this was a speedboat and the local lad driving it decided to go full throttle which was most amusing and we missed the sunset but it was hilarious nonetheless)

The private beach is held in by an 8 foot high retaining wall but steps take you right down into the sea. There is a small secluded public beach off to one side. Which you will have to paddle in the sea to get to. But it is lovely and we had most of our wedding pictures taken there. From the private beach. It's raised position is the perfect place to kick back and watch the most beatifull sunsets.

Worth noting that yes you do see insects and bugs at the hotel, but as someone said earlier, this is part of nature and Mauritius is a tropical island. What do you expect?

So, this hotel is perfect for romantic couples, who have a mind of their own and like to travel their own way and get away from the masses.

It is not suitable for yobs, louts, groups, families, or package holiday plebs. If you are one of these then don't come here as you won't like it and you will spoil the perfect serene atmosphere for those that appreciate it for what it is.

Thanks
Alasdair and Jessica

Booked a deluxe room for 100 euros a night the day before arrival.

We were upgraded to the beautiful Garden Suite and enjoyed a romantic and fun week lounging around.

It's essentially a nine-bedroom boutique hotel on the beach in Pereybere, a village on the north coast, and is popular with honeymooners.

Breakfasts were superb - especially the eggs benedict with fresh marlin and fish roe - and delivered on linen tablecloths to our balcony or laid out on the sole table on the beach.

There is a decent pool, free bar with local spirits, rum, gin and juices, free internet and free watersports. We were ferried by speedboat to the coral reefs for snorkelling.

We had lovely seafood dinners at great local restaurants nearby - try Sea Lovers next door, Camaron Rouge and, the best of the lot, Le Pescatore in Mont Choisy. The real Italian ice cream parlour at the very edge of Pereybere heading towards Port Louis is great too.

Cap Malhereux is a scenic spot down the road and the the botanical gardens complete with giant tortoises are fun at Pamplemousses.

We drifted around the hotel and surrounding area all week in a very happy, relaxed, romantic and fun bubble.

Thoroughly recommend.

We had booked and paid a one week vacation in Ocean Beauty two months before the date of our arrival. We had chosen to book Ocean Beauty because of the good reviews and beautiful pictures. We took a taxi from the airport and as we got to Pereybere driver gave a call to the hotel as he couldn't find the place. After the phone call, we were told by the driver that the hotel is overbooked and we shall be staying in a much older and more modest sister hotel Ocean Villas, until Ocean Beauty is ready to take us in. We were dissapointed and upset, both because we had to settle in a hotel that we had not chosen and because Ocean Beauty did not even bother to contact us directly, but we had to hear the bad news from the driver.

We were staying four nights in Ocean Villas and only three nights in Ocean Beauty. When we finally got to the hotel that we had booked, we insisted on some explanation and compensation, because especially after seeing Ocean Beauty we realised how much we had missed while we had to spend more than half of our holiday in this another hotel. However, even then we didn't get a proper answer from the staff. Someone from reservation department claimed that she will contact marketing director, but when after two days I went to ask if anything is happening, they still didn't have any comepensation or hardly even an apology to offer. Not an upgrade, not a free dinner, not even a bottle of wine! Finally, after three nights and on our last morning in Ocean Beauty, we were told that we could use a shower in another room after check-out before we head back to the airport. And that was our compensation for spending four nights in a wrong hotel, having to pack and unpack our things, having to travel from one hotel to the another during our short little vacation! Not to mention losing our option for free drinks and activities that were available on Ocean Beauty. To add insult to an injury, we did not even get the present that was promised for 7-night stay!

So, I would recommend the hotel for being a beautiful place. But if you want to get what you are paying for, if you want that promises are kept and if you want to be treated with respect, choose an another hotel! But maybe we just happend to be the unlucky ones, so after long consideration, I decided to give a thumb up. But that is only because of the place.

Mauritius is so far away from the USA that I'd not do it ever again, but it was interesting to see. It actually took me two over night flights and about 40 hours door-to-door. The hotel did have a guy with my name on it when we arrived to my surprise.

The hotel was very quaint and in a good location. The rooms were nice looking, with large bathrooms and small kitchens. They only had a 4 foot high mini-fridge that disappointed me. They served us a free made-to order breakfast that was really great. We made lunches and many dinners in the room.

The capital Port Louis is large for an island in the middle of nowhere, and worth walking around in. There was some shopping since they produce textiles there. The restaurants were good, and never got sick. Taxi drivers often only speak a local mix of French.

The tile floors were dirty from a lazy cleaning staff and my own high level requirement. Had them do special cleaning of my floors, and it was fine.

Take the tour to Coconut Island and snorkel the marine park. Take the south island tour through the mountains; great views.

Stayed here 4 nights in September and was really pleasantly surprised - we wanted to get away from the dictatorship of 'dressing-up' at the all-inclusive resorts, but were not sure how this would compare. Rooms were spacious, clean and very comfy and the staff were faultless.
Just one gripe- we chose to have the traditional Mauritian meal one night on our own balcony and wanted to drink our own wine - we were told the corkage fee would be about 20€ or we could buy their wine at 24€! So we didn't bother. The meal was lovely but the wine was sadly missing.

The restaurant next door ,'Sea Lovers ', has excellent food, but it is pricey and make sure you check the bill(for those little 'extras'). Also, the owner (?) is very pushy and maybe would do well to leave his customers to enjoy their meal in peace.

We took the big 'cat' trip to Islot Gabriel in the north one day and cqn quite honestly say it was one of the best trips of my life- wonderful crew, and excellent snorkelling- we saw all sorts of fish and a reef shark - brilliant! we booked at a little place just opposite 'Sea Lovers'.
