Luxurious, relaxing and idyllic

Review of Ocean Beauty
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 24 Sept 2008
Ocean Beauty is everything its website promises and a little bit more. The rooms are luxurious, the staff helpful and the location perfect. Pereybere is a lovely seaside village with some great places to eat out. Don't come here if you want to be in the hub of activity or for an exciting night-life, but if you're looking to relax and get away from it all, this place is paradise.

We arrived at the airport in early in morning - thinking we might save a few pennies we thought we'd get the local bus instead of a taxi. In the end heat, exhaustion and better judgement caused us to bargain with a taxi driver and he took us straight to the hotel for 1300 MUR. Later in a hol we used the local buses which was a fantastic but very slow experience.... it was definitely a great decision to get a taxi to the hotel which turned out to be over an hours drive.

We were lucky enough to be allowed straight into our room which was great even though check-in was much later in the day.

The rooms are spacious enough with a luxurious bathroom. The pool and sun loungers are great. And the room service breakfast a feast every morning. A couple of nights we bought food to eat back at the tables in the resort by the beach - the best position for an evening meal in the whole of Mauritius...!

The service is really good and we were often brought snacks and cocktails "on-the-house" when we were lazing by the pool. The beaches on northern Mauritius are ok but not wide and the sand is a little course. The snorkelling off Pereybere is ok, quite a few fish and the coral is suprisingly good, but the visibility wasn't great.

Having taken a cycle ride around the coast and also walking through Pereybere and Grand Baie I believe that Ocean Beauty must be the best resort in its price range. Its location is unsurpassed and it's great because there are only 9 rooms so it's never overcrowed or noisy.

September was also a great time to visit as it's shoulder season and so not very busy at all (only 3 couples staying at Ocean Beauty) and the weather is still hot enough for sun-bathing (but not so hot you cook...!).

All in all an absolutely fantastic holiday, couldn't ask for any more for a honeymoon.... other than a few more weeks...

    Reviewed 27 July 2008

We stayed at Ocean Beauty for 13 nights in July and thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the hotel. I wasn't as blown away by it when we first arrived as I had hoped, probably because I had read too many great reviews and nothing was a surprise! But I was won over as our stay went on by the relaxing surroundings and particularly by the consistency of the good service and attention to detail.

We arrived early in the morning and, as expected, couldn't check in immediately (early checkin would have cost a full night's rate, which I think is a shame considering the hotel was nowhere near full, but of course the management is entitled to enforce this - it would just be great service not to). We were shown a shower room where we could change and our luggage was stored for us while we relaxed by the pool until we could check in.

We had a Garden Suite (called Anemone) and it was beautiful. The view was only over reception and the fish pond, and judging by the size of the terrace it was narrower than most of the other suites, but it did have a kitchenette, which was an unexpected bonus and very handy. The room was large and comfortable and the bathroom enormous with a lovely big bath that I could even share with my 6'5" boyfriend. It was great to come in from swimming in the late afternoon and warm up in the bath with a drink.

Breakfast was fantastic, as has been reported many times. Every afternoon that we were by the pool we were brought some sort of snack, and on a number of evenings champagne and snacks were delivered to our room, and they were delicious. I really enjoyed the food served at our "romantic dinner" although there was far far too much of it - and we are not light eaters. We didn't appreciate being serenaded as we ate, but we're unusual - I'm sure most people would find it very romantic.
What I really loved was that the service was consistently fantastic. Because it's a small hotel, we saw the same staff members all the time, and also probably because it's small, the room was always serviced at the same time in the morning unless we were in the way, in which case it was done as soon as we left. All members of staff were friendly without being at all intrusive, leaving us to enjoy each other's company.

We had stayed in Pereybere before and really like the village and the beach. We went into Grand Baie for dinner twice but otherwise ate locally and found the food cheap and good. The location of the hotel right on a (small) beach is very nice, with lovely views from the pool area. The snorkelling right in front of the hotel was great and the water, even in winter, was warm enough, although the pool was freezing.

We were there to relax and spend most of our time lying by the pool reading books or in the sea snorkelling. We did do the excursion package offered by the hotel and found the trips to be of high quality with a great driver.

By the way, we had perfect weather for all except about one day and one morning when there was some drizzle. We swam on these days anyway. Otherwise sunny and temperatures in the low 20s - but felt warmer - every day. Plenty warm enough for swimming and sunbathing and sometimes hot enough to jump into the very cold pool.

Overall we were very impressed with the hotel and would happily go back, although next time I think we would shell out for a suite with an ocean view. If you like small hotels and peace and quiet as we do, I would highly recommend this hotel to you.

The first thing you should know before reading this review is that we are seriously fussy people :-)

After deciding to go a bit further afield for our hols, we finally settled on Mauritius. I then spent a good month resarching places to stay (mainly using this site - thanks guys!) and settled on the Ocean Beauty. We booked direct with the hotel, via web and email and it was all very easy and friendly (also booked the flights with Air Mauritius online, again very good!). We had a garden suite, near reception and the rooms were gorgeous...
beautifully furnished with a giant, comfortable bed.

From our veranda, we could sit and look out onto the lovely, well maintained gardens whilst listening to exotic birdsong and the gentle rippling of water from their koi pool. Sometimes Minah birds and the occasional gecko would pop by out of curiosity.

The pool was always quiet and very clean. The staff bring you snack and complimentary drinks now and then and if you have one of the meal packages there you are in for a real treat as the chef is absolutely stunning. He can do things with a Red Mullet which would make it glad it had been caught!

Anyway, I could go on for hours about how magical this hotel and indeed island is but I still would be unable to really so it justice. All in all I can't ever remember feeling as relaxed as I did here. The people are friendly, the climate is warm and the scenery stunning.

    Go to Mauritius
    Stay at the Ocean Beauty

    You WON'T be disappointed!

(oh and if you have a few extra quid knocking about, fly business class - you won't regret it!)

We booked a garden suite at Ocean Beauty 6 months in advance then went travelling through Spain, Morocco and Africa for 5 months. On the flight to Mauritius we were nervous as to what to expect having done it all ourselves on the net but what a fantastic surprise. We arrived with no luggage - lost for 48hrs - to be welcomed with champagne, fruit platter and a great suite with a kitchen and a nice bathroom.
Having no toiletries with us the supplied molton brown products came in very handy. We walked the 3-5km into grand bae the next day to purchase swimmers, thongs and general supplies to then spend the next week relaxing by the pool, swimming in the small beach, scuba diving and reading.
Great Thai restaurant across the road and a fantastic italian one in grand bae. Handy supermarket for extra supplies across the road.
It was exactly what we had wanted after 5 months of backpacking.
The only complaint I would have was the rooms were not sound proof and the couple in the room next to us persisted in playing music on their laptop until 3am and we could hear all their activities.
The bathplug was unable to be removed to empty the bath after one night so we did not use it again and the toilet did not flush one morning - but both these issues were fixed ASAP.
Not all the reception staff were pleasant and when there was a mix up for our dinner the night before we were not given an apology and made to feel it was our fault.
This did not ruin our stay and we left a week later well and truely relaxed and keen to return one day.

We stayed at Ocean Beauty for 10 nights found the hotel to be of a very high standard. We had booked the Ocean Suite room (supposedly the best room in the hotel) which was overlooking the pool area and the ocean located on the 1st floor. The room was of an excellent size with plenty of storage space with a separate single bedroom and a large bathroom with a walk in shower and separate toilet.

Since this was our honeymoon we had booked the love package***

We were greeted to champagne on arrival with an ice bucket & bottle in our room. We done all the activities in the package such as the sunset cruise, dinner on the beech, massage and water sports. All these were fantastic and it’s a very good service the hotel provides which I would recommend to any guests.

The staff were all very attentive and seen to your every need. You really do feel well looked after at all times. The Jewell in the crown in Ashvin, the young waiter. I found his manor and professionalism top class. Nothing was ever a problem for him regardless of it being 7am or 11pm he was always a very friendly and helpful. The other staff are also friendly but they don’t really seem to go out of their way or go the extra yard compared to Ashvin's efforts. Ashvin is a great asset to the hotel and I doubt our stay would have been that extra bit more enjoyable if he were not there!

So why have I not gave the hotel a 5 star review?

As good as the hotel was there were some issues which unfortunately lowers the standard slightly. Here is a few of the issues I had.

1.-There is no walk on beech, just a pool area,to get to the beech(if you can call it that) you have to walk down a dozen or so steps.(the website pictures are taken very, very well to hide this fact)So bear this in mind if stairs will be an issue for you

2.- The ocean room not really worth paying the extra money as you do get a view of the waters but the neighbouring hotel has alot of large trees which in particular block the sunset which was a big disapointment

3.-There are not enough sun loungers in the pool area for all guests at one time, resulting in a few disputes from time to time.

4.- Spaying and chasing Ants and Lizards seem to make a regular appearance in our room every night so get some bug spray...if you dont like Lizards running on the ceiing above you head then be wary!

Some tips if you are staying here.

If you do go for the “dinner on the beech” offer then be prepared to pay over extortionate prices for the wine on offer, no drinks come free with the dinner and the cheapest bottle is about 20EUR* The champagne on the menu they are selling for 35 EUR which you can buy across the road in the supermarket for under 8 EUR!

The food however was fantastic and presented beautifully which just about made up for the ridiculous prices.

Don’t get the hotel transfers to and from the airport, arrange this either before or while there as the hotel doubles the cost for their guests for some reason. This also applies to any day trips that the hotel offers, you can book the same trips in Grand Baie for halfprice so if you are doing a few tours forget booking with the hotel.

We found the senior managements attidude very disapointing and was glad he was not around at he hotel much, he could learn from Asvins mannor and efforts which could only improve the hotel.

We only had problems with the bathroom in the last day regarding the smell, it was starting to smell awful and somehow was becoming infested with Ants.

All in all a good hotel let down by a few little issues here and there. If going back to Mauritius we would not stay here again, mainly due to the lack of beech!

Just returned and have to say a great place to stay. If you are after a friendly, sylish and independent experience, then you will not be disappointed. The boutique nature and intimate size of the place is a welcome change from the insulated 'all inclusive' resorts commonly found along the west coast - if that is your thing, don't stay here! Views over the beach were great, plenty of good local restaurants, fruit stands and so on.. free internet, random complimentary snacks throughout the day and fantastic breakfast each morning. Really good value too... Scott, UK
