Good, but need to balance some other reviews

Review of Ocean Beauty
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 20 Dec 2007
I read a lot of off-the-chart reviews for this hotel, mainly by people who rented a suite, so I think it needs to be balanced a bit...

First of all, yes it is a great hotel, has slow-but-free WiFi and is very well located, in Pereybere, where you'll find at least a dozens of restaurants (600 to 1200 rupees for lunch or dinner for 2) and several boutiques, an ATM and a Change for your foreign currencies. There is a supermarket on the other side of the road, and a pharmacy 50m away.
It is a 5-min cab ride (150 ruppies = 4 euros) away from Grand Baie.

We are just finishing our stay there, after 2 weeks in a "Deluxe" room. There are actually only Deluxe rooms or suites in this hotel. And apparently Suite customers who stay over 7 nights get also a great "Love at first sight" package that includes for instance the massage on the beach, or the dinner on the beach... which is over twice as much as the price of an expensive restaurant if you have to pay for it!

Our room is on the ground floor, and only about 20 square meters big, with a huge bed in the middle, so not a lot of available space really. And here are the things that didn't go so well:
- there is no chair in the room, or anywhere to put our clothes on – we asked for one and got it within the hour though
- there is only one towel bar in the bathroom, too bad as the towels are huge (great!) but there is nowehre to hang them! And this towel bar which barely supports 1 towel broke twice during our stay, and they never really fixed it
- the bathroom may be clean, but we had ants and 2 huge cockroaches during our stay :-(
- the bath gel and shampoo were not filled in regularly
- there is a hairdryer in the bathroom, but no plug, and there are plus in the room... but no mirror!
- our wardrobe door has a broken hinge, another one barely OK and a last one fine, but the whole 2 weeks it made a squeaking noise every time we opened it, didn't close properly and we were scared to receive it on our feet eventually...
- we found the pillows to be too thick, and woke up with neck pains... and when we asked the staff if they could find another one for us, they said yes, claimed to have found one at the other Ocean hotel in Grand Baie (after a few days)... but there was not difference so we ended up sleeping with our travel pillows :-(
- we had to ask the reception after being told by other guests to find out that we were allowed to take a water ski ride for free... great but we could have spent 2 weeks there without knowing it!
- the staff is not really knowledgeable about the trips and excursions they propose, so don't be surprised when the tour you've booked is slightly different from what you expected

So we know that all of these little things may not be a problem for everyone, but the goal of this post is really to balance some of the "all is beautiful" ones.
Yes it is a very good hotel, the pool is great, only few guests as there are only maybe 10 suites+rooms, it is perfectly located and the staff is smiling, but it could be better.

Would we come again? Yes. But we would probably look into the suites rather than the rooms.

Ocean Beauty is the perfect name for this resort. This boutique hotel is everything its website describes - the photos are real!

The things I remember most is that the staff were really nice and friendly and seemed genuine - not stuck up at all unlike some 1st class hotels! The rooms and grounds were exceptionally clean. The food was excellent, and there was always a free sunbed! The room was massive - ocearn suite, I loved the comfortable bed, massive bath and shower and music in the bathroom! There were also a few surprises snacks and champagne every other day which added to this retreat. I also got to meet the owner - nice bloke too!

It is a quiet hotel in a small resort. The hotel does not provide evening entertainment and does not yet have a bar (there are plans). The hotel is however in the middle of Perrybere - so supermarket across the road and a good selection of restaurants less than 5 mins walk away. For a bar with a dance floor you would need to go to Grand Baie which cost £4 in a taxi.

I saw lots of couples there and some familys with very young children - both seemed happy. There are watersports available arranged by reception. If you want to go clubbing every night or really enjoy the cheesy entertainment that some hotels provide its probably not for you.

But if you want somewhere clean to stay, great views, a pool, impecible service and enjoy eating out - then this is a great place to stay. I have stayed in hotels all over the world. This is the only one I wish I could pick up and take home!

We have just returned from 2 weeks at Ocean beauty and the hotel does indeed deserve all the great reviews on this site.

We had one of the Garden suites. The decor was lovely, with great attention to detail and lots of space. we even had a small kitchen with everything you need to cook a simple meal and a massive fridge for all our drinks. the bathroom was huge and the shower was fantastic. There was even a cot for our baby daughter provided by the hotel.

The hotel grounds are small but perfectly formed, which means that it never feels claustrophobic. The fact that the hotel wasn't technically 'on the beach' was never an issue since the public beach was only a few steps away. Hardly a difficult trip.

To me though, the one thing that differenciates Ocean Beauty from other hotels is the service. From our arrival at the airport we were looked after extremely well. Previous reviews have very accurately described how the staff can never do enough for guests and it's all true. The additional services thrown in like massage, snorkelling trips and diner were of very high standard and a very nice add-on. special mention to the breakfast which was very very good.

The hotel doesn't have a restaurant or bar, but there are plenty of those around in Pereybere and Grand Baie is only a 5 mins (Rs 400 return) taxi ride. Even with a small baby we went out almost every night and everywhere was more than happy to have the pram next to our table with our daughter asleep in it.

All in all, if you want a small, quiet boutique hotel then this is the place to go.

When I first booked this accomodation, I was nervous because the pictures on the website and the reviews were so good, and yet, compared to many Mauritius hotels, it is so cheap. It just seemed too good to be true!
However after returning from Ocean Beauty two days ago, I can confirm it IS outstanding value and everything positive that you read in the other reviews is completely accurate. We had a Garden Suite and if you stay for 7 nights you get the excellent "celebrate love" package for free, and it is definitely worth having. I was expecting a token meal and massage, but these are quality extras - and lots of them. The "standard rooms" are half the size and don't get the extras.

We were met at the airport, whisked to the reception to be greeted by champagne, shown to a beautiful spotless room, decorated with flower petals everywhere, champagne, fruit platter. Breakfast was delivered to the room each morning and was delicious and varied. The complimentary "celebrate love" package was outstanding with a beautiful 6 course dinner, beach massage and countless water activities that we didn't even use. The hotel is quiet and relaxing and perfect for couples. We didn't experience any of the problems with plumbing that other people have mentioned and our room was tastefully decorated and wasn't at all dated in my opinion. Having travelled the world and stayed in some of the best hotels available, this probably ranks as my number one best value hotel.

The only slight negatives from my perspective were : Not enough sun loungers for everyone, resulting in apparent occasional "reservation by towel syndrome" - although some days we were the only people at the pool.

Complimentary snacks and drinks were wonderful - but somewhat random. Luckily the shop over the road was more predictable.

The "private beach" is a bit of a non-event (although seemed good for snorkelling) and the public beach a few yards down gets very crowded with locals and isn't particularly impressive. (Walking a few minutes further north reveals a beautiful quiet stretch of beach however).

Noise insulation between our room and the adjoining room could have been better - especially when they try so hard to be "romantic".

Overall though, and especially given the price, this is outstanding value. Perhaps a bit dead if you have kids or are looking for something lively as the emphasis is strongly on relaxation and romance.

As a vegetarian I found local food pretty uninspiring and there's a limit to how many vegetable curries a man can stand. On the whole it is very cheap though and we also found the Sea Lovers Restaurant a few doors down to be the best of the bunch. [I would personally avoid Paparazi restaurant in Grand Baie - Its vastly expensive and our food was terrible]

You can easily see many of the island sights in one day and hiring a taxi for the day is very cheap - it cost us 1800 rupees for the whole day and you go only where you want, when you want and our driver was flexible, informative and very helpful. The bus to Grand Baie is easy, frequent and cheap at only 10 rupees, but going much further would be a bit of a bus change marathon.

Personally I wasn't a great fan of Perybere or Grand Baie as they both seemed a bit "down market" but I guess it depends upon your expectations. There are plenty of restaurants within minutes walk of the hotel, but none I wanted to go back to! Moving Ocean Beauty to Flic En Flac beach would be perfect !!

This is indeed a lovely hotel. It is a nice change from all-inclusive hotels. It is very pretty outdoors and the beach is great for snorkelling. BUT there is hardly anybody there during the day, so if you need somethig, it is quite tricky. You are more or less left to your own devices. Our main disappointment was the rooms. They are a little dated and not 5 star. The toilets smelt a little bit funny at times and the bathroom was a little old.
I would still recommend it as a simple no-fuss hotel if you want to do your own thing.

We stayed at Ocean Beauty for 12 nights and had a wonderfull time. The hotel was everything we expected and more. The service was impeccable and the staff brought us complementary drinks and snacks almost everyday. We had the candle light dinner on the beach and the food was excellent, even if it was a bit more expensiv than the restaurants in the village. We highly recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a relaxing vacation.
