The wharf is the quintessential part of Bergen. Most of the old buildings house restaurants or shops. It’s free to walk around.

Went for an early morning walk to see the houses.
I was delightfully surprised to see such beautiful shop windows.
Had to return to do some shopping! Houses were beautiful but the lovely souvenir shops were what caught my eye.
Historic wharf was interesting too.

The sun was shining (lucky us) and it was a lovely opportunity to have a slow walk around the beautiful buildings. You have to admire the people who constructed these buildings, that they have lasted so long in what must be very harsh weather conditions for large chunks of the year.
We didn’t bother with the museum. There are lots of small shops selling all sorts of things, from paintings, leather goods (moose), knives, fishing gear, hats, reindeer or seal skins, jewellery etc.
Definitely take your camera.

Don't miss walking around the wharf area of town when visiting Bergen. The old buildings are very quaint and you'll find yourself taking lots of pictures. Walk along both sides of the street so you can look at the boats that are docked on one side and explore the buildings/shops on the other. While most of the old buildings are now home to souvenir shops, it's still great fun to explore. This area is certainly filled with tourists, but that's ok - the sidewalk area is wide and you'll be able to get around just fine. Bring your camera!

The wharf itself was over-run by tourists in groups and individuals. I found the outside bars were a small version of what you find in Copenhagen. There are a lot of tourist shops and a few restaurants which we did not go into. We did spend some time in the Hanseatic Museum. It was interesting to clamber around the rooms and see where the merchants and their apprentices lived. Two to a minuscule bed certainly gave you pause but probably kept the apprentices warm in the colder months. There was little signage and we did not have a guide. You may get more out of a guided tour. I suspect one reason for the lack of Norwegian enthusiasm for this museum is that it emphasized the German merchants who ran the business and excluded Norwegians.
