I love classic hotels. Whenever I travel I either go for places that are the old Grand Dames of a place for personality or I go with the most interesting modern, shiny, new place- my preference is normally the classic place if there is one. The problem with the Grand Hotel is that it is trying to be something it isn't perhaps.

I wanted to love this hotel but I didn't. Firstly it isnt 5- star no matter how much it advertises it is. Ammenties in the bathrooms, the fitouts, the standard of the rooms isn't 5 star. Our room was unbearably hot no matter what we did with the controls. We asked someone to fix it and was promised before we left for dinner but upon our return nothing had changed. My husband awoke too hot to sleep in the small hours of the morning and rang reception but were told there wasn't much to be done unless we wanted to move rooms in the middle of the night. Instead, we opened the window (it's Winter and -10) to get some cool air and of course it's a Saturday night and the streets were incredibly noisy. And so, earplugs in we tried to get more sleep. No one followed up with us the following day which is what a true 5 star would do.

At the beginning of the trip, I stayed in the Hotel Bristol (another historical style hotel) and value for money wise and attention to service, I preferred its authenticity.

What I did love was the location, the breakfast (although PLEASE get some decent coffee), the Wine Bar and the Roof Top Bar. The latter two had great, helpful staff.

When we first arrived we were not overly impressed with the first room we were offered. It was in centre of the hotel with windows looking into a central interval area of the hotel, the room was pokey with not very much natural light and a lot of noisy work going on with workmen, so naturally we weren’t overly enamoured with the prospect of this for our stay. Little diplomacy from Mrs L and our second room which we were offered was more like it. This room was lovely and spacious, classy decor, more natural light with windows looking outside the hotel and a super comfy bed. The breakfasts were really good and the staff were very nice and helpful throughout the hotel. Cocktail bar on the top floor was really nice, it wasn’t cheap but that’s Oslo for you. The cocktails were first class!

They were just in the prospect of updating the entrance foyer which the staff kindly allowed us to take a look at. This was very impressive.

Think we stayed March 2016 but couldn’t go back that far with the calendar in the app.

This is not a 5 Star luxury Hotel, bathrooms are very small, and worn out. Location and breakfast is great, but that’s it. Rooms are very disappointing, tv cables are visible in a bad way and just a poor experience overall. Would expect much better for the price you guys charge, never again sorry

Good room, service and location in the middle of Oslo, close to public transportation.Stepping into this hotel is amazing, like going back in history. Both the lobby and remaining parts of the building are amazing.

My experience of this fabulous hotel in the heart of Oslo concerns the lobby area and the bar on the 8th floor which overlooks the city's beautiful square with the National Theater. What can I say about the lobby and the adjacent luxurious ground floor bar with its "Murano" chandelier and orchid flowers? Awesome! Tastefully decorated combining old and new, classic and modern art exhibits! The bar on the 8th floor is good for all ages offering a superb heated veranda with views across the square, good music and friendly, casual atmposphere.
