“A Paradise for Book Worms Inundated in a Clueless Search”

An unorthodox bookstore for those who enjoy immersing into the clueless search for a print which might just catch your eye, resonate with your heart or remind you that you tagged this volume on your wishlist months or even years ago. But as noted by many reviewers, no price stickers policy causes some uneasiness and at a certain point you become wary of asking again and again a guy at the cash desk about the cost. An owner chatting with her friends at the back comes radiantly to greet visitors and asks about their preferences which provides this outpost of English language literature in Vienna even with more ambience. I was witnessing Aussie tourists asking for some weird book by a bunch of fictional authors which made headlines in Australia. They were proud to tell the shop this bestseller was now in print in UK and they wanted to find a proof of it on shelf here to triumphantly report back home.

I used to buy my English books at a place on Mariahilfe but that is gone. Shakespeare and Co. is now the best choice if you don't want to go to the suburbs. It's in the old city and near some fascinating churches, such as St Ruprecht, so you can combine sightseeing and book-buying. The stock is good in mysteries and fiction. Not too bad in Austrian history. Staff is knowledgeable. It's a typical non-chain bookstore - ramshackle, a bit messy, for book-lovers.

It's an English language bookstore which is what I was looking for. It's real small. And it doesn't have used books or old books. And is mostly paperbacks. It's ok but not great.

Great little bookstore , don't expect the one in Paris this one is smaller. We loved this little bookshop and chatting with the lady who runs it. Lots to choose from and don't forget to get your purchases stamped.
