One cannot visit Vienna without strolling around the most civilised square in Europe - The Graben !
The nearby Kohlmarkt is also a must- visit as it captures everyday life.

It must the nicest shopping district where shopping is not the main attraction, walking along admiring the old buildings and architecture; the shops are nice but most of them are the same as most major cities.

though framed by all the high end stores that Vienna has to offer, the Graben and the Kohlmarkt are from a bygone era. Old buidlings - perfectly preserved and looking out at monuments and particularly the Monument giving thanks for the survival of the City from the plague. Great place to wander (close to St Stephan's square) and to people watch - quite often there are a variety of buskers there with all sorts of entertainment.

I'm not really a shopping person, but as well as the high-class shops the amazing architecture makes it well worth having a stroll through the area.
