Owner description: The Cultural World Heritage Site of Schönbrunn Palace is Austria's most frequently visited tourist attraction. In the palace the residential and state rooms with their original furnishings and decorations convey an authentic impression of the imperial lifestyle. The park and gardens surrounding the palace make Schönbrunn in a unique synthesis of Baroque art as well as providing a convenient and highly popular recreational area for Vienna's population.

Using our joint ticket with Hofberg palace, we toured this palace. The rooms were more elaborate than the Hofberg. At times the audio guide repeated the same information verbatim as the tour at Hofberg.

The palace gardens are worth the time to walk around and enjoy.

Be warned - seats are far between in the palace. Also no photos in the palace.

When you arrive and buy a ticket, you will get an entry time. Be aware that your time may be an hour or more after you buy the ticket. You can tour the gardens while you are waiting. We bought the Classic Pass which includes the palace, the privy garden, and the orangery. Unfortunately, we were on a schedule that day and had to leave at a particular time, so we did not get to see the orangery.

The gardens are huge. There are fountains and sculptures and various paths to take. A lot of it is in the sun(not so good on a hot day) but there are shady areas as well. We didn't have time to see all of the gardens, but I'm sure it would be pleasant to do so.

The privy garden is small but pretty. Most of it is not available for walking. There is a viewing platform where you can get a good overall view.

The palace, like many others we have seen, is a series of rooms and furnishings that reveal how the one percent used to live.Along with everyone else, you follow the hallway through the rooms, one by one. The audioguides are a must if you want to understand what you are looking at. It was very crowded when we were there on a Wednesday. It was hot and stuffy, although in a few rooms someone had opened the window to let in a little fresh air. We were hot and thirsty most of the time.

We enjoyed our visit to what was once the summer hunting cottage for the Hapsburgs. We have been to many palaces/castles all over Europe, and this was one of the best. It has some unique features that we have not seen elsewhere. We also took the train around the grounds which were quite beautiful. It was more than we could walk - plus it was pretty hot that day.

A beautiful palace with audio guide so you know what you're looking at. No photos allowed though. Christmas market out front.
