This museum is worth a visit if you have a bit of a morbid streak and/or an interest in Viennese funeral/death culture from the turn of the last century. It's located within the massive, historic Vienna Central Cemetery (Zentralfriedhof), so you could tie it in with a visit to the cemetery as a whole. The exhibits include not only the sorts of things you might expect (coffins, carriages used specifically for funeral processions) but also distinctive objects like funeral jewelry and invitations to the funerals of famous people. It's a bit of a long ride on the streetcar to get there, but interesting in that the route goes well off Vienna's beaten tourist path.

Lots of black and dark grey décor! A thorough explanation of Viennese funeral procedures. Nothing too macabre, but not for all tastes. 5 euros each. Very few souvenirs on sale. Three quarters of an hour is sufficient here. OK if you are visiting the Zentralfriedhof anyway, but otherwise perhaps not worth making a special journey for.

We spent a good hour here. All the displays have excellent English translations. I loved the old films and the way in which the subject was tackled.

Some weeks ago I went to Vienna to see the "Bestattungsmuseum" (funeral museum) which is located on Zentralfriedhof (central cemetery). You can go there by tram, bus or car. I prefer the tram. It takes about 30 minutes to walk the exhibition. Then you can buy a "kaffeehaeferl" (mug, 6 Euro) or cemetery honey (3 Euro). Great museum!
