“Hermit in the Tower”
Review of Mariendom Linz

Mariendom Linz

Reviewed 1 August 2018 via mobile

This beautiful cathedral offers a room in its spire for rent on a weekly basis. A project by Linz 2009 European Capital of Culture and the Diocese of Linz is called the Hermit in the Tower. 395 steps up gets you to your small room with a single bed and desk with chair. Rent includes food but residents are asked to reflect on life, write in a daily journal, and spend 20 minutes a day in silent communion with visitors of the cathedral at the 12:15 midday prayer services. Rent is reasonable and views spectacular!

The highlight of this church is definitely the stained glass windows -- some are very traditional and some are very modern. An interesting fact we learned is that you can spend the weekend in the bell tower for meditation and contemplation!

It was a beautiful experience, amazing architecture of the building. And the warmth of the place too.

This cathedral in a neogothical style is the largest church building in Austria. The interior is really impressive. Interesting detail, that the vaults are covered in brick, and the cathedral has only one very tall tower. While most of the painted glass windows are classical, the windows in the apse are modern and the patterns are unique. Visit in the late afternoon, the lights are amazing.

For Cathedral afficianados this is a must visit if only for perhaps seeing the very best of 19th Century Gothic construction - yes this is a relatively new cathedral built on a grand scale in very traditional manner using 19th century technology rather than medieval technology. The glass is wonderful to behold - even the necessary post war replacements at the eastern end in contrasting modern style. The internal ceiling detail is more interesting and intricate than St Stephen Cathedral in Vienna.

After visiting several over-decorated and over adorned churches in Salzburg and Linz this seemed more in the understated Protestant tradition and is a place of tranquility. We visited it twice on consecutive days liking it so much.
