Owner description: Take the panorama funicular railway up the mountain at Hallstatt to discover the mysterious attraction of this mystical area. The path leads to the tunnel mouth and into a unique underground world first dug by hand more than 3000 years ago: many kilometres of tunnels lead deep into the rock interior. Enjoy a day full of fun and information at the Salt Mine Hallstatt for the hole family.

Although the English translations were a bit limited, this was still an interesting and fun tour. The slides are a unique experience as well as the miner's train ride out of the tunnels. The animated video presentation that was superimposed on what they state are the oldest wooden steps in the world was extremely well done. I think my anthropologist daughter would have approved. Great for families and older adults as well. The views from the top were beautiful as well.

Until recently, I thought that salt was extracted from the sea. The salt mines in Hallstatt are centuries old and deep inside the mountain.

A ride up the funicular takes you to the entry point where a guide takes you deep inside the mine explaining its history and current state. These mines brought a lot of wealth to the region due to its trading power.

The mine has a few slides to connect the other shafts and the school kids in our tour had a lot of fun sliding down. The audio and video shows inside the mine were nicely done as well.

The highlight of the tour was our miner's train ride back out of the mine which was a lot of fun.

The cable car ride and viewing platform provide fantastic views of the very charming village, lake and mountains in the area.

However, the salt mine tour itself was disappointing. It ought to be a very interesting attraction given the historical and economic significance of salt mining to the region. Unfortunately, it is not particularly well curated. The tour guide, though charming and patient, was really only there to take the group from one room to the next and is not given much of a role to provide insight into the world of mining. You are then shown a short video in each room (German audio, English subtitles), which is like a snippet of a documentary which you could just watch at home. There is a light show at the subterranean salt lake which was pretty but not very informative. There are two slides and a train ride, which are fun, though admittedly gimmicky. The experience was not very imaginative or immersive, and failed to showcase how impressive the mines really are.

The tour groups are also far too large and poorly organised. We went in with a class of school children, a full tour bus and a load of independent travellers. This meant you ended up spending ages waiting to queue to get inside, waiting for people to move from one room to the next and waiting for everyone to get down the slides. We weren't even there at high season so I dread to think what the waiting times are like in peak season. In addition, the tour bus group spoke a foreign language so their guide was trying to shout out a translation at each video stop which was distracting. Apparantly there is an app you can download for the tour with information in different languages but it seems they were not told about this, plus I would think it would be easier for tourists if the attraction handed out audio guides rather than expecting all visitors to be technologically capable or willing to download (yet another) app.

A must for all visitors in Hallstatt.
A cable car get you up to Rudolfsturm some 300 meter above Hallstatt.
From there a nice walk get you to the beginning of the salt mine tour. After adding some protective clothes the the tour starts with a multilingual guide and miner.
It is very interesting to learn about the 7000 year old history of salt mining in Hallstatt. Presentations are excellent and the highlight for all is the ride on a long wooden slide. After touring in the mine for one hour your are brought out from the mine by a little miner train.
At the end you are having a great photo shot from a little Platform 300 meter above Hallstatt with a great view from the lake and the surrounding mountains.

I paid around 30 euros per person and it included the cable car ride up and down the mountain, plus a guided tour down the mines, protective suit, and a trip to the skywalk. I think it was a fun activity, plus lovely scenery from the skywalk.
