Owner description: Icelandic Mountain Guides is Iceland's premier adventure tour operator. The company was established in 1994 by four young outdoor enthusiasts with a passion for nature, travel and environmental advocacy. These pioneers aimed to introduce the wonders of Icelandic nature to travelers from all over the world. We started by offering Glacier Walks in Skaftafell and later on Solheimajokull glacier. Hiking, backpacking and other adventures and expeditions in Iceland and Greenland soon followed. Today, Icelandic Mountain Guides offers adventure tours ranging from short day tours to longer multi-day expeditions in the great outdoors in both summer and winter. So whether it is the exploration of the icescapes of glaciers and ice caves, crossing of impressive highlands, trekking in the extraordinary rhyolite massifs or hiking in fascinating valleys, our aim is to Make Every Moment an Experience.

I would give the Blue Ice Experience from Skaftafell 10 stars if I could. This was the absolute highlight of our trip to Iceland for my elementary and middle school age children. We saw gorgeous scenery and learned a lot about glaciers. And the hike is not strenuous for adults and children in good health. For kids, the highlight is that you get to use a pick axe. We had to use them as canes when we were hiking, but when we stopped at various points, they were allowed to chip away at the ice. It was pretty fun for adults, too! The guide (Ran) was wonderful with children and incredibly adept with non-English/Icelandic speaking members of the group as well. I highly recommend the Blue Ice Experience and the professionals at Icelandic Mountain Guides.

At first I was a bit not sure whether or not to book the glacier walk, or the ice climbing. In the end we opted for ice climbing. This is a great choice for the more adventurous as it includes a fairly long glacier walk as well (the whole day was ~4 hours), so I didn't feel I missed out!

Our guide, Tinna, was very fun and explained all the necessary techniques and safety instructions required to walk on the glacier and to scale the ice walls. She ensured that we were positioned safely on the ice at all times, and even gave us a demonstration of how the anchors are drilled into the ice.

The day also included abseiling down into a small ice cave to get a feel for what it is like inside the glacier caves. Very amazing experience.
