Description: Seafood restaurant by the old harbor in Reykjavik, Iceland. Founder was Kjartan Halldórsson who lived and served at the Seabaron until Elísabet, an employee who worked at the Seabaron with Kjartan with passion for a long time and helped him continue the business when it got busier every year, took over in his final days. They're unique grandfather/daughter friend relationship became a blooming business by the old harbor and more and more people wanted to come and try this old fishermans lobster soup that he swore to be the best in the world! Kjartan is remembered by anyone that was lucky enough to meet him and his spirit still lives at the Seabaron. The menu is the same as when he started it and we continue to serve fairly priced freshest Icelandic fish grilled on skewers and the worlds best lobster soup! P.S our beers are quite cheap and go very well with our delicious menu! Our soup and skewers are lactose and glucose free!

You can tell a fish place is legit when the menu is the actual fish itself. You can see the skewers and cuts of fish in the freezer and decide based on that what you would like to eat. Very unpretentious and super delicious. We got the cod, the Arctic char, and the scallops and were totally blown away by not just the freshness of the fish itself, but the intelligence with which it was cooked. You can even self serve your own sauces! Definitely go!!

Hi Sonia!
Thank you so much for this amazing review and 5 stars. Very appreciated.
So glad you feel it is unpretentious and that it met your standards!
It is the worst when you see a menu and the meal doesn't live up to it, but I am glad it did in your case :)
To us simplicity is the best and therefor it cooks to such perfection. One type of spice and on the hot grill and we let it do it's magic until it's time to be served into a watering mouth! :D
Hope to have you back one day

We stopped for meals at Saegreifinn when we were in Iceland in 2015. We loved it then and knew we would return on this visit. The arrangement is that you choose from a variety of fishes on skewers (Salmon, shrimp, redfish, cod, etc.) and vegetables (potatoes, zucchini, etc) on skewers. They then grill what you have chosen. Meanwhile, we also ordered their wonderful lobster soup, which is served with French bread and butter. It is all delicious and a surprisingly good value. You order at and pay at the counter, and when the food is ready, a waiter brings it to your table.

We chose little secret gem from a Rick Stein TV programme and we were not disappointed. The opposite. Fresh scallops, red fish, monkfish, even whale if you feel adventorous. Delicious, healthy and amazing taste: the kebabs. Will certainly recommend.

This place reminds me of some hole-in-the wall restaurants in Boston, where the focus is on the food, not the decor. Service is efficient: you pick your choice of kebab (e.g. cod, shrimp, scallop, salmon, arctic char, vegetables), place your order, and go find a table. Limited choices on the menu, but the food is cooked perfectly. The only downside is that because of its harbor location it can sometimes be overrun with tourists and IMO it is not worth waiting in line half an hour to place your order. So, try to go at an off-peak time for a late lunch. Prices were also very reasonable (for Iceland) because of the lack of all that extra restaurant overhead. Basically, you're getting a gourmet meal served in a cafeteria-like setting, and that was just fine with our hungry family!

Hi Smatasar!
Thank you for this great review and 5 stars.
Very glad your family enjoyed your meal with us and that it satisfied your hungry tummies! :)
We are located in an old fishermens building that was last used in the 1960's and the Seabaron himself, Kjartan Halldórsson had it that way. Simple, homely & loving :)
We hope to welcome you back one day
Have a great day!

Although the seatin in the entry room is tight, the food is scrumptious. The lobster soup had 4-5 large langoustines in the soup. The cod kabob was cooked perfectly - not over downe so the fish was moist and perfectly seasoned. My meal with wine was 4250 isk. We did not have to wait and if we did the meal is worth waiting.
