Owner description: Visit Waimangu Volcanic Valley and find out how the world began. Incredible Waimangu is the world's youngest geothermal system and a destination for travellers of all ages and fitness levels. Created in 1886 as the result of a massive volcanic eruption, Waimangu offers today's travellers a choice of easy self-guided walks through a natural environment of volcanic craters and awesome geothermal activity. Frying Pan Lake is the world's largest hot water spring; stunning Inferno Crater will take your breath away with the beauty of its turquoise blue lake; the environment itself will slow you down and soothe your soul. The more advanced Mt Haszard hike rewards with panoramic views, and our Lake Rotomahana cruise will reveal further geothermal activity that can only be seen from our vessel. Your entrance fee includes interpretive guides in a wide variety of languages for both the walks and the cruise. Our courtesy coach regularly circulates the valley to take you to your Lake Rotomahana Cruise, or back to the Visitor Centre when you've finished your walk, where you can enjoy refreshments in our modern Café or browse for mementos and souvenirs at our gift shop. Depending on how much time you have, your walk or cruise can range from 45 minutes to over 4 hours.

My wife really enjoys learning about the geology of the locations we visit while I am concentrating on the bird species and bird photography. She found this tour very pleasant and a good fit for her interest. It consists of a boat trip around the lake after a demonstration of NZ Maori dance traditions ( which was well done and a good small group venue ). This dance and talk afterward set the stage for the trip with indigenous cultural aspects of what we were about to see. Buffet lunch was ok but nothing special.

Had lovely morning walk here through the wilderness and thermal pools. Used map to give us commentary of area. Went up steep walk...it was steep amd noone else followed us...but we felt proud at the top and seeing lovely view over area. Got bus back but had to wait half hour for bus so plan well...there us nothing at the end like cafe just the lake and swans but would be nice area for picnic.

The natural situation of this valley is exceptional. All the expressions of geothermal activity are there with the added bonus of far fewer people than at other Rotorua area attractions. We just loved the walk down the valley and the boat around the lake. The concept that this is such a newly formed area (from 1886 volcanic eruption) is just mind blowing!

We absolutely loved this thermal park. It was absolutely beautiful. Very well run. Beautiful views, beautiful thermal lakes. Paths we're very easy. Buses are there to take you back to the front of the park so you save time. We really loved it. Especially inferno crater

This was our 4th visit to rotorua and I can’t believe it took us this long to discover Waimangu. Probably the best thermal area we’ve seen, scenic, great features, and we loved the format - walk along the track from the top of the hill down to the lake, and catch a shuttle bus back. As we had a toddler (in a backpack), this was the easiest way to see a large area. The large steaming lakes were the highlight, as were the numerous small geysers.
