This hotel is sensational. It is an easy 40 minutes drive from Copenhagen airport and there is ample parking on site. The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is close by as is Karen Blixen's Museum and house. Helsingor, Hillerod and Fredensborg are all less than 30 minutes drive so the Castle is perfectly positioned for exploring these areas.
We stayed in one of the castle rooms which was fully airconditioned (important given the current heatwave in Europe). The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. The bathroom was large although the shower was poorly designed in that water went everywhere as there was nothing to stop it flowing from the shower area.
Breakfast was served each morning on the terrace. There was a generous buffet with the usual cereal, yoghurt, fruit, ham, cheese, salmon, breads and pastries. This was supplemented by a cooked breakfast made to order and delicious coffee not the watery American style. Evening meals were also served on the terrace and the food was excellent - fresh and innovative served by knowledgeable staff who seemed to enjoy their work and were more than prepared to offer assistance on things to do in the area.
Not being a golfer, I cannot comment on the golf course other than to say it provided a beautiful backdrop to the hotel and afforded lovely walks. We also did not visit the spa or pool area so I cannot comment on them.
On the issue of staff, I only have the highest regard for them. They were friendly, helpful and went out of their way to make our stay comfortable. Unfortunately I managed to leave a small purse at the hotel which I did not realise until the hotel contacted me. The contents including some cash and travel cards were all there. The hotel arranged to ship the purse back home to me and credited my Visa card for the amount of cash less the shipping costs. I think this speaks volumes about the hotel and the culture it encourages amongst its employees.
One last thing, I would recommend checking the rates on the hotel's website as the rates offered there are generally better than those found on the Small Luxury Hotels of the World website.

This is a really nice place, an old castle surrounded by golf course. Stayed there in July. Denmark had nice waether combined with friendly and professional staff. This was a perfect experience. Regretted that we only stayed one night.

Dinned here with friends. Friendly and very helpfull staff. The menu very small, but what we choose was delicious, crab and tuna for starter and steak and chicken as main. The desert was not interesting, we had creme brullé and rhubarb with white chocolate mousse.

Stayed on business , luxurious decor in the room with excellent detail in the toiletries and room facilities all apart from the lack of tea and coffee hence the very good and not excellent also the room was opposite the main door to the block and suffered from the noise of the outside door opening and closing. The restaurants offered a good choice of dishes and beautifully matched wine cellar with a lot of local produce. Due to the short stay there was not sufficient time to use the spa , golf or horse riding facilities. However having a room with a terrace overlooking the meadow and lake was nice if only I had a coffee ! Perfect place I would say for couples break

Room Tip: Room with a terrace but away from the block entrance

All the potential for tranquility, comfort and relaxation is there, however one presumes it is present ONLY in the Castle House, certainly not in the annex rooms, the assignment of which was a surprise because of the advertising focus on ONLY the castle. The annex room had a bathroom the size of a small powder room - no place to put anything more than a tooth brush over an itty bitty sink. The shower was also so small that as my husband who is not a big man explained, if you drop the bar of soap, forget it because it was impossible to bend over! The hand held shower was put into a position by the maid so when I turned on the shower, it flooded the bathroom and sprayed against the wall of the bathroom dousing the toilet, as well. The room was clean and felt newly renovated (the old stables?). The room renovator/architect certainly didn't consider EITHER form or function. The furniture was uncomfortable for sitting. The bed had a thin "mattress" over a hard box spring (?).

The Terrace Restaurant in the castle house was mediocre at best for both dinner and then breakfast. The dishes on the very limited menu were beautifully plated but anything but "gourmet" as advertised. The Ceasar salad was fine, however it was downhill from there...The mountain of mussels were devoid of a flavorful broth, and the Chicken Fricassee had a sauce which I am sure came from a Knorr mix packet. The rhubarb dessert was sour and minuscule. The food was bland and uninspired.

Room Tip: Do not stay in the annex, however I have no idea if the rooms in the Castle House are any better.
