Owner description: The Traditional House of Kalymnos is a privately held folk museum, founded by Mrs. Scylla - Chalkidiou. The aim of the museum is to preserve and promote the Kalymnian lifestyle of the past century. It is located on the southern outskirts of Agioi Pantes Monastery, in the area Vothynoi, and includes objects of folk culture and old household furniture. The museum is actually a restored traditional house in which you will find artifacts collected from across the island. They are exposed in a way that helps revive the story of a traditional urban house of the late 19th and early 20th century. Here you will travel back in time, by observing the main daily activities, the social events and of course the legendary life of the Kalymnian sponge catcher! In this lovely home you will see, among others, traditional costumes, everyday utilitarian objects and representations of household activities and tasks.

Don't bother going there. It's like look at someone's grandma 's attic. No explanation on history or what are on display. It's a chaotic display of random sponges, old photos and some costumes. Not worth 3Euros. The Archeology Museum of Kalymnos is so much better and is free.

Great little museum. Irene is really informative and gave a very interesting history of kalymnian culture. She also made fantastic recommendations of what to do on kalymnos, well worth a visit.

A visit to the Folk Museum is a trip back in time, then you will understand the island's history much better, you will be received with genuine Kalymnian kindness and can leisurely enjoy the collection

This is a private museum and unique in the sense that the owner has collected artifacts and pictures of the past centuries showing how the interior of the houses was a couple of centuries ago. How the cooking was done, the cribs of the babies in the old days, the dress code, the doweries, but most of all the life of the sponge divers. How they were getting ready to depart for the Southern seas, what was life like when they were home and when they were gone. Finally the ritual of their return but also the ritual and the mourning of when there was no return !

Loved the way the owner had turned his house into a shrine to the past of the island. Full of information and fascinating artefacts. As we left the owner called us in to the back room and gave us a glass of what he called Kaymnian wine. Well recommended.
