“A gem of a place”
Reviewed 6 September 2016 for a stay in August 2016

We stayed at Smaragda for two weeks in late August, we were a couple.

We loved the property. It was just the right mixture of off the beaten track and close enough to civilisation if you wanted to take part. The property itself is in a small village, 15 minutes drive up a mountain, with spectacular views. The beauty being that after the very hot day, it would be cool enough to get a break from the heat.

Our time spent in this part of Crete was visiting local places of interest and towns; the many blue flag beaches nearby; sampling the very good food at various Tavernas. The list is endless and we were never stuck for something to do. Everybody was so friendly and welcoming.

Ioanna, the owner would regularly inform us of tourism tips, which made us feel very well looked after.

Ioanna has created a beautiful property, inside and out, with great attention to detail. We had the choice of sitting upstairs on one deck, overlooking the beautiful coast, or sitting outside downstairs. And for the very hot times, always a sun umbrella.

The property is well supplied, we were able to make simple meals bought using produce bought locally. In the local area - we were very near quite a large town, Ierepetra - there are a lot of supermarkets; bakeries and fishmongers. By the end of the two weeks knew them all quite well. The choice is very good.

I would highly recommend this property if you are a couple who enjoy being somewhere that has character and enjoy independent travel. I would definitely return, question is when?!

“Rustic and peaceful”

We stayed here for 3 nights in August and enjoyed every minute. The tiny village of Anatoli is charming and authentic, as derelict as it is this only emphasises the rich character of the area and the people.
We were looking for somewhere that was cosy without compromising on comfort and this definitely filled those expectations. The house we stayed in had recently been refurbished but retained all the stone features and felt very homely.
The views are breathtaking, especially on the steep mountain drive, we had rented a car so we had the freedom to explore the area and surrounding villages, which were all similarly authentic and seemed at times even deserted. We did get lost a few times finding our way back, particularly at night, but this only added to the adventure - just make sure you have a full tank!
The people were exceptionally helpful and friendly everywhere we went - all eager to help with directions and recommendations.
I would recommend this rental for travellers who are looking to unwind & relax in a truly rustic setting and experience the Cretan culture. Ideal if you are looking for a place to explore yet find some peace and quiet with your partner. Please note that the beach is at least a 30 minute drive, if not more, and the commercial towns are much further away, this is a unique holiday, far away from touristic hubs, and a truly wonderful getaway from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Thank you Ioanna.

“All the little things make this a prefect place to stay”
Reviewed 26 April 2015 for a stay in April 2015

We stayed here for 4 nights in early April..the House is in a rather derelict village with so many of the buildings in dis repair but thus added to the charm in some ways as it was sui quiet!. The house was everything we had hoped for. Warm and welcoming. It was all the little touches in the house that made it feel like a home from home. Unfortunately the weather was not that good while we were there but having heating and an open Fire made it really cosy. The one good morning we had breakfast outside. It was bliss ! Would so recommend this house for all of the little things that made it prefect for us.
