Review of Central Market

After hearing about this market ,being a foodie, I had to go. What a huge waste of time. It was beyond disgusting , had a terrible stench and the types of individuals hanging around looking for tourists to pick pocket was alarming. We immediately realised we made a huge mistake taking a taxi here and got out of there!
We took two taxis as we are a family of six, the taxi that left before us arrived after ours and charged quite a bit more. You have to be very careful to put your google map on while in a taxi as you can obviously be taken around the long way, as our kids had to learn today.
Back to the market, it does not feel as though you are experiencing authentic Greek food, you feel like you are in a third world with all eyes on you...hold your wife, hold your kids, hold your bag...never go there.

This was so interesting. One side is meats, the other side is seafood. Everything is VERY fresh. Yes, there are carcasses hanging, and sheep heads etc., but the market is extremely clean and NOT smelly. If I had access to a kitchen I would be here every day. The meats looked so good, and the fish were extraordinary in freshness and breadth of selection.
Surrounding shops sold spices, seasoning mixes, cookware, etc.

Great, lively local market near Omonia square.
Stalls of meat and fish in the main hall.
Huge variety of fish and sea fruit.
Outside the covered market, you can buy local spices like mix herbs for Feta cheese or for
Greek salad.
Nearby stalls for household items.

Do not miss it!

This a fantastic meat and fish market, and walking round it was so interesting. The atmosphere was amazing with the shouts of the sellers and the crowds of tourists wandering through. I preferred the fish market side, and there was a huge variety of fish of all shapes and sizes to suit all tastes. The meat market was also good but somehow the smell of the meat turned my stomach over.
There are various places to eat and drink here.
Well worth a visit and thoroughly recommended.
