Ancient Greece has provided so much for contemorary America and the rest of the free world. It was developed in a set of buildings that have a history architecturally in themselves. They are all centered on the Acropolis. Don't leave Athens without taking an escorted tour.

Everyone who visits Athens must experience the Acropolis. Unfortunately, countless tour buses in a steady stream begin arriving around 9 AM and continue throughout the morning. We planned to go later in the day but ended up being there around 2 pm while it was still very crowded and hot. It is incredible to see the Parthenon and other Greek temples but not an especially pleasant experience because of the uneven stone steps and height you must climb. Also the footing is slippery because of sand on the stones and wind blows the dust around. You will want to be sure to bring some water with you.

A steep climb up to the Acropolis and not for the feeble :)
We went around noon and it was scorching hot! Choose earlier in the day or take a good gallon of water with you (to drink and pour over your head). What a sight when you arrive! Just beautiful!

I think you get the best view from Acropolis over the Athens. You have to climb up so it’s better to go early in the morning or in the evening (open from 8am -8 pm). There is no shade. Entrance ticket is 20€.
Unfortunately they are renovating the Parthenon. They are not open earlier or later in the day, so no sunrise or sunset pictures during summer.
Some of the stairs are very slippery so whatch out how you step down from Acropolis.
