This was our 7th visit to Antigua, although it was the first time we have been at the end of the season. The villas we usually book are priced in US dollars and were too expensive this year with the weak GB £. However the price for this apartment appears to be based on GB £, and even if it is not, the cost for our two week stay was very reasonable. In addition the booking experience through Howard was extremely straightforward and well organised, and our host, Jenny, could not have been more helpful.
Hamilton House Apartment 4 is on the ground floor, situated in a relatively large property with 3 other apartments. The half acre, attractive garden is well maintained, with a lovely, full-size outdoor pool that includes a sundeck, canopy and loungers. The accommodation is spacious, fully equipped and relatively clean. There are air conditioning units and ceiling fans in each room, hi speed internet with WIFI, cable TV and DVD, as well as a large, although somewhat dated cooker, dishwasher and washing machine.
I believe these apartments are only 10 years old, but most of the fixtures fittings and appliances are now approaching their end of life and show signs of age, wear-and-tear and corrosion. Some areas of the apartment would also benefit from a more thorough cleaning, but the overall standard was perfectly acceptable and plenty of clean bedding and towels were provided. There is no backup generator at the property, but we only experienced one short power cut during our two week stay, so I suspect it is fine without one. There is also an outdoor veranda and barbecue area exclusive to the apartment.
Hamilton House is very close to the Jolly Harbour complex, with a small, but well stocked Epicurean supermarket. However we still did our main shopping at the Epicurean near the Woods Centre in St Johns, as it is much bigger. There are several very lovely beaches nearby, such Valley Church Beach, and Coco Beach with its excellent snorkelling near the shoreline. If you have a car, there are many more fantastic beaches just slightly further afield, such as Darkwood, Deep Bay and Hawskbill. There are several restaurants nearby - they looked fine, although we did not try any of them because one member of my family suffers from serious food allergies, so we usually prepare all our own meals.
During our stay, we also hired a 19ft self drive motorboat from Paradise Boats at Jolly harbour for a day and we had a fantastic time visiting Five islands, Cades Reef, Hermitage Beach and Rendevous Bay. We were lucky enough to see a shark, a turtle and a sting ray during this trip, as well as plenty of beautiful fish! It is best to have some previous motor boat experience if you do this though, and it was a little choppy on the day we went, plus the reef is extremely shallow in places.
At this time of year, the weather was a little wetter and cloudier than we had encountered before. However it was still lovely with plenty of warm sunshine on many days. The sea water was particularly warm and it was probably the hottest we remember it!
If you are looking for good value, well equipped, spacious self catering accommodation set in one of the best locations on the island, then Hamilton House Apartments are an ideal choice.
As far as location is concerned. This apartment is great. Short stroll from the nearest beach and surrounded by many other beautiful beaches close by.
The apartment is just as described, clean and very comfortable. There is a large supermarket minutes walk away where you can purchase pretty much what ever you need. There is also a complex of bars and restaurants across the road, in case you don't feel like cooking (including a double decker bus which serves great fish and chips) There are some great places to get snacks and food from on the beach near jolly beach and please do look out for Dave. He sells tours etc on the beach and believe me, he was a godsend. Enjoy your stay as much as we did.
P.S. Jenny the management agent was great too
We came here on a holiday to reunite our granddad with his siblings so this was set to be a special time already and staying here added to the experience. If you are looking for a comfortable place that has a great location then you can stop looking as this is a great place in a great location
Every thing about this place was exactly as advertised, well kept, stocked and in a good location. We'd be delighted to come back in the future. The only issue was a non-working dishwasher, but that's so small a detail, it really didn't bother us. The beds were comfortable. Living area, porch and other aspects of the property were very nice. Enjoyed our stay very much.
We have just returned from Antigua having had the best holiday due, in the main, to the location of Apartment 3 Hamiilton House which is situated on the best coast (in our opinion) on the island. The apartment is close to some of the best beaches, Ffryes and Valley Church, having been voted best by us after sampling a different beach almost every day. From pick up at the airport by Lava, to being met by Jasmine to be shown the apartment everything went very smoothly. Apartment was clean and the welcome pack of milk, water and orange juice much appreciated. The apartment was well equipped with plenty of towels and the air conditioning very efficient. I particularly liked the decked veranda which had two views, one of the pool and one of the hills and is partially private. Would recommend a car to really see the island and for trips to the supermarket for supplies. Local restaurants are good, particularly Sheer Rocks and the 2 for 1 steak night at the Sugar Club next door. Thanks for everything, we hope to return!
