“Wish we were still there!”

The apartment is one of four and located on the top floor with views towards the Caribbean Sea and the shared swimming pool. It was great having a shower looking out onto the azure blue sea. We wanted self catering and it is well located near a reasonable supermarket, close to lots of the best beaches and with ample parking. We would recommend hiring a car so you can get to all of these things easily and with the comfort of air conditioning as well as having all your snorkelling equipment/ fishing rods/ beach towels etc. handy. (There were plenty of towels provided.)

The apartment was clean, comfortable and well presented although some of the dark wood furniture in the Living/Dining room areas was a little tired and dated, as was the TV (cathode ray: we couldn't link our iPad to it to watch Netflix which wasn't such a bad thing!) and the bedrooms had a lighter feel with new blackout blinds in the second bedroom. At first the WiFi was not always as strong as the signal indicated but improved over the time we were there - I think the guests in the apartment with the router re-booted it which usually helps. We could keep in touch with friend and family, research things to visit and arrange trips so it was good enough for us. The veranda was a generous size and great for relaxing - we often had breakfast there or would read there.
The apartment's air conditioning was very efficient so we didn't mind at all turning it off when we were not in (or didn't think it warranted it on) because you could make the rooms cool very quickly in conjunction with the ceiling fans. The kitchen was well equipped and the welcome pack included a large carton of milk, a carton of juice and a bottle of water. There was washing up liquid, a sponge and even washing up gloves. We also had a cooler block in the freezer, foil, cling film, kitchen roll and one roll of toilet paper in each toilet so you don't have to rush to the supermarket straight away if you don't want to. There were lots of pots and pans and large cutlery (no small pieces for young children, but some baby spoons were there) and the only thing we wanted and couldn't find, was a sieve so we've bought one and left it there. We had read other reviews so had taken a very small amount of salt and pepper and a few dishwasher tablets. We didn't use our BBQ because we made friends with the couple renting the apartment below us and ended up getting together and using theirs but there were plenty of utensils for that too.

The pool was cleaned quite regularly and was a big hit with our 7 year old. We took some inflatables, and would sometimes meet the other guests at the end of the day for a rum punch and sometimes we had the pool to ourselves.

We would recommend booking a day catamaran trip and we also enjoyed Stingray City. Skullduggery cafe at English Harbour makes lovely sandwiches and a mean Espresso Martini. Roti King in St Johns make the best rotis we had and Napoleon cafe is great for a "proper" lunch time meal although you can just have a drink if you want. Explore as many beaches as you can find so you can choose your own favourite.

“IT WAS WELL LOCATED AND HAD EVERYTHING WE NEEDED”

We were very pleased with this apartment and would stay there again if visiting Antigua. We particularly enjoyed spending time and eating on the veranda and had no particular problem with mosquitoes. We found most things we needed in the apartment, but would have appreciated it if things like salt and pepper and dishwasher tablets had been left there as such small quantities are used by each lot of visitors. The plumbing was a bit old-fashioned: the shower temperature was difficult to regulate and water pressure was variable (sometimes water was off, apparently due to faulty pump now replaced). Overall we found it very good value.
The apartment was well located, near some excellent uncommercialised, unspoilt and uncrowded beaches, and places to eat and drink. Car hire essential to get the most out of visiting the island. You can just park free in the trees alongside fabulous almost deserted beaches, but beware - this can dramatically change if cruise ships are in port. You can check the timetable out on-line.
Food in the local Epicure supermarket was expensive and stock variable. The cheapest things were Waitrose essentials! Passport needed for credit card transactions there. A better supermarket with more choice and where locals were shopping was1st Choice the other side of St. Johns, on road to Dickenson Bay.

“Let down by a few niggles”

Apartment 1 is on the first floor - up quite a steep set of stairs. Once inside, it is spacious and well equipped with full air conditioning and ceiling fans. Large veranda with a gas fired grill which was very efficient. Everything worked and it was all very clean with plenty of towels but it all needs a complete re-fit as it is all very dated. It is about 20 mins walk from the beach at Jolly Harbour and the supermarket is about 10 minutes away - both involve a walk along a very busy road. There is a pizza place and a fish and chip restaurant opposite and the Sugar Ridge Hotel next door also serves food.
Small things annoyed us - no dishwasher tablets - and you have to buy a massive bag of these from the supermarket if you want to use the dishwasher. Being told to limit the use of the air conditioning as it is very expensive.Only one set of keys was provided which was a little inconvenient. Hot water was a bit hit and miss. Bed linen desperately needs to be replaced. On departure day, the cleaners arrived well before check out time. They asked to come in and collect the laundry but then just stayed which we felt was a little rude.
The main issue we had was that check out time was 10am and we were told that we could store our luggage at the apartment until pick up time for the trip back to the airport at 4.30pm. However, as the next guests were arriving at 2pm we were told that luggage storage beyond this time was not possible. After much discussion and investigation into alternatives, the property manager arranged for the owners of a nearby villa to look after our bags - very kind but we felt as though we were imposing on others and felt uncomfortable in leaving our bags with strangers.
Also, we were told that we could use the facilities at Sugar Ridge - but this is not the case. The new managers there are not happy with this arrangement. I understand that the literature regarding apartment 1 has now been changed to reflect this but beware that with a 10am checkout you may have a long time to kill if you are taking one of the evening flights back to the UK.
We had a nice holiday but arrangements for the final day provided unwelcome stress which was a little upsetting.

“Fantastic base for our first trip to a beautiful island!”

We prefer to self cater on our holidays (travelling with a toddler who naps in the afternoons) and this place ticked all the boxes for us. Good value, spacious and well appointed apartment with a fantastic veranda and gas BBQ for the evenings. Use of a sizeable shared pool and loungers too - in a complex of 4 apartments. Well located near Jolly Harbour's amenities including a well-stocked supermarket (which bizarrely sells Waitrose products!). This is in walking distance but own transport or taxi preferable given the heat and humidity. Just over the road is a fish and chip restaurant served out of a vintage London bus and also a pizza place. Numerous fantastic beaches within 5 minutes drive (generally very quiet and secluded unless it is cruise ship day when all descend upon them), all have authentic Caribbean beach bars. Housekeeping easily available if any queries and Don's offer of some fresh fish is worth taking up if you have a big appetite! We would thoroughly recommend a stay here and hope to return one day.

“Homely villa, close to Jolly Harbour”
Reviewed 29 September 2013 for a stay in July 2013

Homely, unpretentious villa, close to the night life of Jolly Harbour. It is great to be welcomed by the lady managing the villas. Air con was good and it was a nice welcoming touch to have juice, milk and bread in the fridge when we arrived.
