We revisited taking some friends. Always a chance that things are not so good but have no fear it was as wonderful as the last time. We have visited later in the year so the weather was not perfect but still mostly warm and sunny.More
We stayed a week on a bed and breakfast basis in Block C.
The hotel had a wonderful relaxing atmosphere with staff (all) that were very attentive, friendly (smiley with a sense of humour) and efficient. Breakfast was brilliant with a huge choice to appeal to everyone.
We had dinner in the hotel on four nights as the food was delicious and beautifully presented. Then a long walk along the promenade.
We used the car park in the basement (a fee) this saved worrying about where to park especially when we were going off with our walking gear.
The view from the garden by the pool was very relaxing and there was a fascinating selection of plants from around the World.
We would definately stay here again

Great location for hotel 5 mins from the forum shopping centre with a large supermarket, no 2 bus takes you into Funchal for 1.80 euro each way. Staff At the hotel so pleasant and professional. Breakfast fab especially the omelette station freshly made for you. Pool area good no scrabble for sunbeds. Would recommend the cable car to. Note and the toboggan ride down the hill 25 euro s for two people and 10 for the photo if you want it. A bus will take you back to Funchal across the road but plenty of taxis too. City tour bus well worth it to to see around the city and the villlages on the outskirts. We never had a bad meal whilst we were there catering for all tastes the islanders have it spot on. We ate at the ritz cafe upstairs overlooking the gardens and saw the Sian Lesley show on the Saturday night 45 euros each for a 3 Course dinner with wine then the show which was very entertaining. We ate at the Fort which was superb would definitely go back there. We also found a good restaurants 10 mins walk from the hotel the staff will direct you also a cafe cal led the sunset terrace whic was good. The lido area was amazing salt water salt water so,be prepared for fish. The accommodation in the hotel was excellent lovely big rooms we had and upgrade floor 5 block B with a good view. We loved Madeira and will be back.

We loved this place. Perfect location overlooking Praia Formosa, away from the high rises and yet close to amenities. The service was excellent and when we initially queried the room we had been given, management could not have looked after us any better. The facilities and decor of the hotel are spot on. We would definitely recommend it and would come back here

Second year of an October half term break on this beautiful island in the super hotel.
The rooms are apartment based with kitchenette, not really suited to cooking, but who goes on holiday to cook anyway??!! The fridge is a good size and useful. Rooms are kept very clean with maid service every day....in fact the hotel as a whole is spotless.
The hotel is, as much of the island, built into the sides of hills and consists of three separate buildings (A,B & C), all linked by a series of lifts, corridors and stairs and a crossing across the road between B and C where the bus stop with regular buses stop. Block A is the top road side with access to The Forum, a large shopping centre with handy supermarket, Block B is where we have stayed both years in rooms with “partial” sea view which is actually a very good sea view!
Block C holds more rooms plus the restaurant and spa. Access from here to the outdoor pool, plentiful sunbeds and tables in beautiful gardens with a glorious view.
Despite other reviews, we have found breakfast to be very good indeed with a great choice of fresh hot and cold items and excellent morning wake up coffee. Yes, it can get very busy but that is not unusual at peak morning times in the vast majority of hotels.
The lunchtime menu available in the bar and the outside “shack” is good too.
The hotel is obviously managed very well. Staff are extremely friendly and very attentive.
We were sad to hear that the resident we enjoyed the entertainment of last year had passed away but he has been replaced by the hilarious antics of kitten Oshca. We were desperate to smuggle him home as a new friend for our cat but not sure that the hotel staff or customs would be appreciative!!
The hotel is about a 20 minute walk or 10 minute bus ride from the centre of Funchal. This suits us and there is a significant number of very good restaurants and bars in the immediate area.....we ventured to more this year and were not disappointed by any.
All in all, we would highly recommend Madeira and the Golden Residence. We will be back.

This is a lovely hotel. staff are very efficient and friendly. The rooms are clean and hotel is very quiet. A bit of a trek if in block b when coming into the hotel from the forum Madeira side - Up and down lifts and corridors. Pool area is spotless and towels are provided. Lovely views. Breakfast is nice but not as good as last year - think that the natural yoghurt is watered down as the breakfast time gets later? Seemed to be quite thick early on but if you go later then the yoghurt is very watery. Also not much choice of things to go with the natural yoghurt. There was nuts only one day but some seeds and berries wouldn't go amiss. Management of people at breakfast during a recent hurricane was excellent. Would visit again.

Concerning the buffet breakfast, we are very happy to offer many different choices everyday. From monday to sunday we have at our guests’ disposal: 12 different sorts of bread including croissants – served 8 types per day; coffee / milk (hot and cold) / chocolate and 7 different types of teas; 4 different juices (served 2 per day); 6 kinds of jam (served 2 per day); 6 different kind of homemade yogurts (with and without fruits or muesli) – served 3 per day; 6 different types of cheese (3 per day, changeable everyday); 6 types of cured meats (served 3 everyday); Homemade cream covered cake (everyday a different flavour); Homemade cake (everyday a different flavour); 6 types of cereals (changeable everyday) and muesli – served 3 per day; Pancakes or crepes or french toasts – served one type per day; Eggs (boiled, scrambled and fried) in some days omelets; Roasted tomato, sausages, bacon, different types of potatoes and backed beans.; Vegetables/salad (tomato, carrots, lettuce, cucumber and onion); Fresh Fruit (fruit salad and different types of sliced fruits everyday) in some days roasted apples.
