Great place to stay, lovely rooms very clean and Helena was there if you needed her but allowed you time alone , all very good would go again and shall
When we arrived we was greeted by Helena who is extremely friendly and helpful. On entering through the gate, the overall impression is one of a very classical building surrounded by beautiful gardens with outstanding views. We were incredibly grateful to Helena for supplying the best welcome grocery pack which we have ever had! Whilst we were waiting for Carla to finish preparing Rose Cottage, we went to the local bakery (as recommended by Helena) for some delicious cakes. This became a regular morning walk for my husband to get freshly baked bread/croissants and together with the small supermarket next door was more than adequate for our needs.
The walk into Funchal Old Town was ablout 10-15 minutes walk downhill but there is also a bus stop immediately outside which will take you there as well. Plenty of taxis for the return journey for about 5/6 euros - just make sure that that they use the meter! In Funchal Old Town there are numerous restaurants to choose from and all are excellent - we couldn't believe that there are so many top-class chefs in Funcal!
The local bus also takes you to the Botanical Gardens where you can get the cable car to Monte (try the tobaggan, it's worth the experience!).
Overall, we had a lovely holiday and stayed in a beautiful and relaxing environment. If we had to make any critcism it would be that we didn't have any housekeeping during our stay which meant that our towels weren't changed (and we had to purchase toilet rolls!) but this is a very minor problem as it meant that we had a totally relaxing stay without being disturbed.
We would definitey recommend Rose Cottage, only sorry that we didn't get to see the renovations that Helena and Roberto are making to the main building - hopefully this will happen on our next visit! :)
A real treasure. Helena and Roberto were very welcoming and generous hosts, and the apartment, surroundings and location were peaceful and relaxing, with beautiful views across Funchal and the ocean. Helena was always quick to respond to queries and helped us sort out car hire at very short notice. She also made it very easy for us to travel with our young baby, providing a high chair and travel cot. The welcome pack in the apartment on our arrival outshone anything we’ve seen before, and the supplies kept us going for several days. Another lovely touch was Roberto bringing us some freshly cut bananas from the trees on the Quinta, and Helena bringing some delicious home-baked pastries. Although there are five apartments at the Quinta, it is very quiet and we often had the main pool to ourselves, as well as the private plunge pool attached to our apartment. For us the apartment was the perfect distance from the town - a 10-minute walk down the hill to some good restaurants and bars, a bit of a tougher walk uphill back but not too far (and there is a bar halfway up to break the journey), and the bus stops right outside the Quinta for those days when the walk seems a bit too much. The bakery and mini supermarket around the corner provided everything we needed (and lots of bread/cakes/pastries that we didn’t even realise we needed...) and there are bars serving delicious espresso coffee on almost every corner. For those with families, the washing machine came in very handy and was probably the most picturesque outdoor location for a washing machine we’ve ever seen... We were sad not to get a chance to see inside the main building and Roberto’s refurbishments but we are hoping to be back again before too long!
We stayed in Rose Apartment for one week in January 2018. It is a very comfortable and attractive apartment, it is within a Quinta with other apartments within it. It felt very private and safe, had lovely grounds; a great sunny spot to sit and eat breakfast and our own private area with pool for sitting and soaking up the afternoon sun.
The Quinta is about a 10-15 stroll from the Old Town (downhill going and uphill coming back). The Old Town is full of restaurants and bars, although the apartment is self catering with very good facilities we tended to eat breakfast there but go to the Old Town for dinners.
We hired a car for the duration of our stay and had no problem parking right outside, there was always plenty of space and the neighbour felt very safe. If you are looking for peace and tranquility this is the place, it was perfect for a relaxing week away from the British winter.
The housekeeper and owners were very friendly, helpful and thoughtful throughout our stay. We thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommended staying there.
A great place to stay near central Funchal. A very well kept classic building, which features a wonderfuul garden, pool and a very nice shared terrace with a breathtaking view. We appreciated the calm of the garden and the apartment were of good standard and size for our family of four. Would greatly recommend staying there. We rented a car and there was parking available just outside the gate of the hotel.
