“Super base from which you can explore the beautiful island of Madeira”
Reviewed 1 July 2014 for a stay in June 2014

Villa Firdaus was everything my partner and I could have wished for. From the very warm welcome from Joao on arrival right through to our sad departure twelve days later. All the bits in between made for a superb holiday. The villa was about twenty minutes drive from the airport and sits in the Vertudes district of Funchal. The villa was spotlessly clean and very well equipped with everything you could want. The villa was very spacious for the two of us and it was very handy having the shower room and additional bathroom to enable us to get out early in a morning to explore this beautiful island.

The covered veranda was used every breakfast time and just about every evening with splendid views over downtown central Funchal. We made good use of the supermarket and bakery less than ten minutes walk away, we can recommend the custard tarts from the bakery. We also used the takeaway which we found to be good as well. Joao was very good and helpful for any advice regarding Levada walks, restaurants, places to visit etc.

Bella the cat and Bobbi the dog were very welcome entertaining guests during our visit. Madeira is a diverse island we found and offers lots of different options, we we're certainly glad we we're there for longer than a week.

“A little paradise”
Reviewed 9 February 2014 for a stay in January 2014

We stayed at Villa Firdaus in January 2014 and loved everything about it.

It is easy to find ( off junction 9) after approx 20 minutes drive from the airport.
There was only 2 of us, hence plenty of space to spread out.
The master bedroom faces the garden and has a firm but comfortable bed with modern en-suite walk-in shower ( no bathtub), toilet and sink.
The other 2 bedrooms face the securely gated front garden/drive.
There is a modern family bathroom with bathtub next to bedroom 3.
A large open plan well stocked kitchen with dining area and living room leads to a covered patio. We has all our breakfasts there with a beautiful partial sea view over Funchal. This patio is also nice for a glass or two in the evening.
Special note must go to the well stocked book case in the living room - plenty of 'romance' and travel guides to Madeira, all in English. This was complemented by the reasonably fast Wifi.
There is another large main patio with sun loungers /chairs/low table overlooking the beautiful securely walled garden.
However we did not manage to use the main patio much due to the mixed weather we had or to phrase it more positive- daily rainbows!
Other reviews have commented on the temperature but we found the house warm enough with the occasional help of the gas fire in the living room.
The Villa and the garden were spotless.
The house is build on a slope and Joao, the wonderful house manager, shares his downstairs flat with his friendly little dog Bobby and his cute black cat Bella.
Bella came to visit often ( we encouraged her) and quickly laid claim to one of the chairs on the covered patio for her naps.
Don't book if you don't like cats or are allergic- Bella was there first!

Joao made our stay extra special, he is an absolute gem.

As mentioned in other reviews there is a very convenient supermarket within walking distance, also a service station, restaurant and bus stop.
We had a ( very scratched) hire car (Seat Ibiza) and used it a lot.
However some of Madeiras roads are not for the fainthearted and you need to be a confident driver.

Recommended:
Drive: Inland past Monte when it is not cloudy, costal drive to Porto Moniz ( northwest coast), Nuns Valley
Gentle walk: Ribero Frio
For a dare: Get up to Cabo Girao -stand on a glass floor 580 m above the sea...

We liked it so much, we have already recommended Villa Firdaus to several friends and will stay there again if we come back to Madeira in future.
