We booked Avenida Arriaga Top Floor almost on a whim, having found some cheap flights and deciding to give Funchal a try.
We used Booking.com and the host Fernando was top class throughout the process. Unusually our flight arrived EARLY, but it was no trouble Fernando arranged for us to check in early.
The apartment is part of a block over some shops and offices so at first glance doesn't look like a place to stay. The interior of the hallways (and the lift!) could definitely do with some TLC and an update, but don't let that put you off.
The actual apartment is a perfect size for 2 people. The balcony has an amazing view over the port and you really get some cracking sunsets, all in all a great spot for a pre-going out G & T or a late night nightcap, and then when you wake up again a great view.
The bedroom is fairly basic and from a woman's point of view mis-matching bed linen is not good, from a man's point of view it's a comfortable bed and does the job! Storage space is great, however it could do with a few more coat hangers, there were only 5.
The kitchen is small, but has everything you need. The coffee machine is a great bonus as just a short walk away is a supermarket and the Portugese coffee is actually pretty nice at around £2 for a bag.
The bathroom has a bath, shower (and a rain shower too!), sink, toilet and a bidet. The shower was great apart from on our last night, when the boiler started playing up, however a quick text to Fernando and he had it all sorted within half an hour! (On a Sunday evening!)
The lounge area was the space we used least, not because there is anything wrong with it, just because the balcony was great! There's a tv, but we never bothered with it and ample seating as well as a 4 seater table.
All in all I would recommend this apartment, and would probably give it 4.75 out of 5, it only lost a minor bit based on the mismatched bed linen, the lack of hangers and there were a couple of cigarette butts on the balcony (however I think our early arrival probably threw the cleaning maid off kilter).
For what we paid and the service we got it really is hard to fault this place.
