Owner description: In 1937 it was named "Barrete Verde" but soon iit was changed to the final name that acquired national and international fame: ADEGA MACHADO. Today one may find a Fado House that renders homage to its history, to the founders and to all those who have added their personal and professional experiences to the memories of ADEGA MACHADO. In the Fado, Amalia Rodrigues proved her affection to this House with two yearly galas; the charismatics Alfredo Marceneiro and Fernando Mauricio came back many times. There are many to be named, but amongst those the interpreters Manuel Fernandes, Francisco Carvalhinho, Raul Nery, Adelino Santos, Beatriz da Conceicao, Maria Amelia Proenca, Maria da Fe and Mariza. The space was totally refurbished based on a new project, with a total preservation of the famous tiled facade and in the interior an area was created to display the large collection of historical images: paintings, drawings and photographs, property of the Machado Family. There is now an additional area, the Wine Cellar that serves traditional tidbits together with a large choice of Portuguese wines.

It is such a shame that tourists coming to enjoy Fado have no idea what were the songs words meaning was. A truly exquisite Fado evening in a restaurant setting. It's a shame that the waiter treats the tourists like he is entitled to be there but not you. We got there through one of the web sites "inviting" us, with a menu discount on the food. First, they've tried to charge the full price, which was costly for what they offered. Anyhow, all in all, the music made all the money, even though we did not understand the words.

Dear Customer,

Strong and unnecessary way of telling the "disadvantage" of not speaking Portuguese, which in the case is not even a disadvantage.

The Fado is mainly understood by the emotional atmosphere of each song, which is expressed by the instruments and includes the interpretation of the voice.

Maybe you will like to know thay some tourists start learning Portuguese after listening Fado!

Thank you very much for your visit, best regards!

After reading the other reviews and there not being a huge amount of veggie food we went for the 5pm to 6pm event, perfect as an introduction to Fado (without the expensive meal). With only a handful of people it was a great intimate event. Really good value including some basic tapas and a drink. But the singing was superb! Totally recommend it!

My first Fado experience and while I loved it, I was curious as to what the story was about (I only speak English) The waiter heard me talking and asked if I would like to meet one of the singers who could explain to me. A lovely performer came over and told me the theme of the performance we had just watched. What a gracious thing to do. The food was expensive and only the dessert was good.

Dear Customer,

Thank you very much. As you had the oportunity, Fado is unique as a musical genre, so we are glad that you got it.

Sad that you didn´t appreciated also the food, maybe another option would have been more adjusted to your taste.

We are sure you will remember us in your next visit to Lisboa.

Restaurant recommended by our hotel. Expensive compared to other restaurants we visited. Live Fado music, the musicians were very good as were the male singers. Sadly the women were not as good. We had a very friendly waiter. Food was average, fish was slightly over cooked. Would not recommend or visit again.
