Significantly strong curtain walls of this C17th fort, built to secure the important harbour of Ponta Delgada against pirates, Spaniards and the French. It saw service in WW1 and WW2 as a significant base in the war, securing the safety of Allied shipping. Currently the fort forms a strategic part of the NATO naval force in the Mid Atlantic, The fort has this strange split between the restricted areas, and those open to the public.
As with so much on the island, there is little or no signage, so we assumed that there would be separate entrances one for visitors and another just for the military that occupy much of the fort - not so, everyone uses the same gate.
Well worth looking around.
