We spent 4 days in Algarve seeing wonderful towns, beaches, and rock formations. After seeing such wonders, we were extremely disappointed in this ‘fortress’, which is essentially some very plain outer walls on the east side, and once you get ‘inside’, you end up in a HUGE unkempt field of rocks and ugly invasive plants. Two of us commented that perhaps this is what the surface of the moon might look like. We walked a couple of kilometers in that wasteland hoping that the lighthouse and other structures would be worth it, but alas, we were sorely disappointed. The only nice thing were the pretty views of the cliffs and beaches along the shore, but we did not need to pay to see those since the view from outside the fortress was just as nice. Do not waste your time here, and instead go for a kayak tour of the caves around Lagos or visit the lovely historic town of Tavira.
