“It doesn't get much better than this...”
Reviewed 8 August 2015 for a stay in July 2015

This was an absolutely epic holiday for our little family of three. I really can't fault anything about the Lodge; the location is so central to some of the most beautiful beaches we've ever seen, the freshest seafood I have ever eaten with a choice of quality and local restaurants to eat them in, water parks (we went to slide & splash and zoomarine which our 3.5 year old son loved - we liked them too!) and the opportunity to really explore a bit further afield if you have a taste for exploring.

As a holiday home, the Lodge is an absolute gem of a find. I researched my accommodation options really well and just kept coming back to the Lodge because I loved the look of the garden. The garden and our own private patio exceeded any expectations we had. With 4 sun loungers, an umbrella, a gas BBQ, wooden outdoor table, beach toys/equipment and a beautifully temperature controlled pool we were all set to never leave this place! It turned out we spent a lot of time out and about but The Lodge was a true home from home to come back to. When we did use the pool we had it entirely to ourselves - I think Gill and Bruce leave guests to it when they're in the pool. It is at the bottom of their garden but it wasn't a problem for us (because it's not a problem for them) and we used our own totally private patio for any reading or sunbathing on the sunloungers.

With everything from salad spinners to champagne stoppers, the kitchen is well beyond equipped (I've actually never stayed in a place which had everything I have a home!). Cooking in the Lodge was a dream! Everything was so clean on arrival (bed sheets and towels smelt freshly laundered!) and the house was nice and cool - there is one a/c unit in the lounge but as long as you leave all of the doors and windows closed to keep the cool air in it wasn't needed (and temperatures hit 41 degrees while we were there!). Both bedrooms have fans so that was sufficient at night.

This is a glowing review because I really couldn't fault the place! Gill and Bruce, true to everyone else's reviews, are one of the most generous, accommodating hosts. We had a farewell drink with them in their beautiful house on our last night (which our little boy loved as it meant he got to play with the dogs!) and it felt like we were visiting family! We really didn't want to leave but we have left with the fondest memories and I can safely say this is the best family holiday we have had in years. If you book with The Lodge, you will not be disappointed!

“Island of privacy on the middle of Algarve”
Reviewed 13 July 2015 for a stay in June 2015

We enjoyed a week stay very much. The Lofge is conveniently located to many beautiful beaches Algarve is known for - Praia da Marinha, Praia de Benagil and the one we loved most - Praia do Carvalho. A car is advisable, unless you plan to stay at the Logde and relax by the pool and in the garden which is definitely not a bad choice, too.

The cottage is well equipped and offers great privacy. The hosts are very friendly and helpful. Next time we decide to go to Algarve, will definitely consider Lodge MM!

“To chill or not to chill!!”
Reviewed 29 June 2015 for a stay in June 2015

Just what we wanted - to chill out for a week or so in an area we have previously visited many times.
After an early start, a good flight, we picked up the hire car and in no time we were outside the gates to the Lodge. Wow!! what an impressive entrance and a very friendly welcome from Gillian and Bruce. It was immediately obvious that this was going to be a great place to stay. The villa was clean and well presented with two good bedrooms, loads of wardrobe space, very comfortable bed, beautifully dressed (even fresh pretty flowers on our pillows!) and a good-sized clean bathroom with a shower. The well-equipped kitchen had every thing we needed (except - and this is a VERY minor point - perhaps a salad spinner before we come again?). The dining and sitting areas, both indoors and out, were just right and the beautiful garden has a secluded patio where we spent much of our time - and of course the luxury of the well-maintained HEATED swimming pool, which we could use whenever we wanted - the owners won't use the pool if guests are using it.
Truffle, Flute and Bobby, the owners very gentle, friendly dogs visited us most days, but we stuck to the rules and didn't feed them.
The many local beaches are great and very clean, and most had at least basic facilities.
Our hosts - Gillian and Bruce - were there if we needed anything and without them we would have missed some super restaurants, all of which served excellent local food at very reasonable prices, within a short drive from the Lodge.
All in all we had a wonderfully relaxing holiday and hope to be back again some time!

“Misleading Advertising”

The pool is located in the owners garden very close to their patio area. The owners make it clear on arrival, and it is also written in the villa book, that they do not want you sitting by the pool. We were told this was so they and us could have our own privacy, however, when we used the pool we didn't have any privacy as the pool is so close to their patio area. This made a holiday with children that would normally play in the pool for a considerable length of time very difficult as we were not able to monitor their safety sitting comfortably by the pool as you would normally expect. We felt that this should be made clear in the advertising and felt the photos misrepresent what is on offer as the angle the pool is photographed at does not show how close the pool is to the owners house nor is it made clear on the website that you are not able to sunbathe by the pool. There wasn't any areas the children could play in. The garden with the swing seat in is covered in dog faeces from their 3 dogs. The temperature of the shower was very temperamental and the shower didn't drain away properly which turned out to be due to a blockage in the soil pipe. The villa was small but clean in the places that are important however the wardrobe floors were very dusty and clothes were covered in dust if the touched the floor. According to the villa handbook there should of been a mid stay clean but this didn't happen although we were provided with clean bedding for us to change the beds. The villa is in a nice part of the Algarve centrally located although we prefer to be closer to Gale beach. We have visited the Algarve and stayed in many villas over the years and definitely would not recommend staying here unless all you want is a base and don't want to use the pool. We felt a bit of an inconvenience to the owners who expected to continue to use their patio and pool during our stay. The advertised wi-fi was practically non existent unless you stood on one leg leaning out of the kitchen window. When we booked the villa we added on a few additional days to our stay which the owner told us we could pay directly to them on arrival. They were keen to relieve us of this money as quickly as possible in spite of the grievances we expressed to them as outlined above. They did give us the option of finding another villa and refunding our money which we didn't want to waste our valuable holiday time doing so we spent most of our time away from the villa making using of the sea and pools available in the area.

Don't know why I am wasting my time replying, but I think perhaps offering you a full refund after two days may say it all.
No - not misleading - more misread, shared pool 28º to 30º free of charge with access at any time, but to sunbathe 15 steps away on your own private fabulous seaview terrace, right in front of your spotlessly clean villa. (on arrival)!
Well as you have been rude, I have to say you left our spotlessly clean villa, not in a good way, but we didn't expect otherwise, so wish we'd insisted you accept the full refund. This is a first negative report we have received, after 25 x 5 star Trip Advisor reports. but can't see you enjoying yourself anywhere.
We so wish you had picked a villa at Gale to terrorise.

“Top of 'Best Holiday' list”
Reviewed 20 May 2015 for a stay in May 2015

Lodge Casa Massai Mara sits at the top of my 'best holidays' list. The location, accommodation, superb facilities and warm welcome from the hosts, Gillian and Bruce Craigie, provided us with a truly unforgettable week's holiday. In addition Portugal's weather provided the icing on the cake. Lodge MM will no doubt feature prominent in our 2016 holiday plans.
