The setting for this vacation home is fantastic. It is set among ancient rocks, along a creek and fresh spring, above the River Sever. You are about halfway between 2 villages, Portagem and San Antonio de Arias. Very near Marvao and Castillo de Vide, two lovely tourist attractions. There is beautiful hiking in the area, and we took our bikes and had 2 weeks of fantastic cycling.
The house has no central heat, so plan your timing to be there in the late spring and summer. We were able to cook all of our meals there, and enjoyed eating and relaxing on the back patio. The home is rustic, in the Portuguese style, but has everything you need.
Richard supplied anything we required, and was helpful in telling us about local attractions. Very accommodating host!

“Stunning setting in national park, gorgeous walks, comfortable and cool house, great base for exploring Marvao.”

We were the first to stay here, and were unprepared for the sheer beauty of the surroundings. It is an arid land, and the heat is a dry heat, but there are plenty of cool spots to sit and take in the surroundings - the edge of the property allows a 270 degree vista of the valley, and is a gorgeous place to sit and read, have a drink or paint. There is complete silence - it would also be a good place to come for mediation or a retreat!
If, however, you want a bit more activity, Marvao proved to be a wonderful town to explore with children ( 6 and 4). there were plenty of family friendly restaurants, and the castle and its walls meant that the children wanted to go back daily....
to the small pool on site, there is a large communal pool in Portagem, and the River Sever can also be swam in (many families were picnicking and diving in when we were there but it was ICY cold.). There is a roman bridge in Portagem, and the feeling of the property itself is that it has been inhabited for hundreds ( thousands?) of years - there are the remains of some walls from which you can get a sense of those that lived there before.
The house is comfortable, the kitchen well equipped, and the shower good.
All was spotlessly clean when we were there.
In addiiton to the castle, the swimming and the walks, we all enjoyed exploring the garden for fruit - when we were there there were pears in season, but depending on the time of year, you could pick figs and other delicacies!

All in all a serene and beautiful place to stay but with the benefits of both physical and cultural activity near by.
We plan to return.....
