Mario was a great tour guide! We learned so much more than we would have if we had visited on our own.

A short drive from Evora you can lose yourself in another time. Almendres Cromlech is reached via a bumpy, potholed dirt road to the hilltop location. Impressive array of stones in a rough circle running down a gently sloped hill with views to the valley below. Count the stones, find and decipher the carvings, and contemplate the reasons why. This is an interesting side trip from Evora or a stop on the way to Evora, where you can also see the cork oak trees and nesting storks.

I lost count at the number of "rocks" we rode our bikes to but it was fun and enjoyable. My husband kept me informed of the history on each site and I took the pictures.

Approximately 7,000 years old, this is a great example of the various stone circles one can visit. It is amazing to stand among the stones and it is fun to follow the diagram in the signage to try and locate the stones with various drawings. We had a clear dry day and although bumpy, the road was easily navigable slowly but surely (in fact there were two large and one small bus in the parking lot when we arrived - fortunately they were all leaving). even though our rental car was low to the ground. The site and parking are free. There is a short walk from the parking lot on a path surrounded by beautiful cork oak trees. As it was May 10, the main road to Evora was also full of green rolling hills, cork oak tress and stork nests with newborn chicks. Highly recommend if you have an interest in stone circles or want a nice-interesting 1/2 day trip from Evora.

We spent an extra night in nearby Evora so we could visit the stones - 95 granite stones in oval shape - very impressive - over 2,000 years older than Stonehenge. Well worth the visit
