I was quite disappointed to see a copy and to pay 4,0 euro and only have a glimpse o,n the painting because there were at least 2à people in the small room. Only afterwards I heard that the restauration was done 3 miles further in the Citadel park.

The cathedral is certainly very large. It has some spectacular elements although a bit dark for my taste
Worth getting the paper guide (20c at entrance when we went) to explain what various bits are.

Our main reason for visiting Ghent was to see the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb by Hubert and Jan van Eyck. It is located in an alcove of St. Bavo's cathedral, one of the most ornate churches I have ever been in. It is in a special alcove rather than over the altar because it is undergoing restoration. It is a good idea to learn about the history of this painting before you see it so that you understand what you are looking at - otherwise you will see it as just another art work from the Middle Ages.

Worth going just to see this amazing painting, it is without doubt a masterpiece. 4Euros each to visit, the rest of the Cathedral is free.
The building itself is amazing, beautiful little chapels with lots of iconography. amazing carvings.
