Owner description: The monumental Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, designed by the architect H.P. Berlage in 1935, is perfect for wandering around in. It houses a varied collection and many changing exhibitions. You will find the world’s biggest collection of works by Piet Mondrian, the highlight being his last abstract work Victory Boogie Woogie, along with some of the finest works by artists of the Hague School, paintings by Picasso, Kandinsky, Van Gogh, Monet, Toorop and many contemporary artists. Gemeentemuseum Den Haag also houses one of the biggest and best collections of Delftware.

The building, designed by Berlage, is a major attraction in itself, but the contents are also splendid. Currently there is a fine exhibition on Art Nouveau in the Netherlands. More permanent collections on Piet Mondrian and De Stijl, and on Delftware, are also very much worth seeing. Highly recommended.

We added this museum to our trip to the Hague to see the Mauritshuis and very much enjoyed the time we spent here. The Max Liebermann exhibition is excellent but there are good permanent modern art galleries, and many quirky art-works dotted around the museum. I particularly liked the Delft exhibition which puts a modern twist onto traditional pieces. The Mondrian art-works are excellent. We had a nice lunch in the bright cafe. It was easy to get to this museum. The No 16 tram goes from the Hague Central Station past the Mauritshuis and then some distance further along the route it stops right outside the Gemeentemuseum.

If you like modern art, you shouldn't miss this museum. There are many world-famous artists, and the building itself is a work of art. While it's not the most popular museum in The Hague, I think it's well worth a visit. It has quite a collection of Mondrians and works by his contemporaries. If you prefer paintings from the 1500s and 1600s, however, it's probably not going to be on the top of your list.

Finally found a bus stop for the 24 line, after getting directions from the doorman of the hotel. Seemed simple enough, go that way->. But what was not explained was the curve in the street and the stop was just before the curve. Watched it, and followed to the next stop, not really seeing the one I needed. Think I am smart enough to figure out where I should get off on the return, Naw. Let off directly in front of the museum, we thought it would not be too long a day, the footprint did not look that large. Entering the tiled space, one way looks like the reverse of the other, needless to say all the flights of stairs. It is a large exhibit space. Several we liked were, Art Nouveau in The Netherlands, Max Liebermann, Jean Brusselsmans, By The Sea, paintings by Piet Mondrian. These all change frequently, what you see when you go depends, check listings. Cafe was good, a bit pricy, but eating in a glass covered indoor courtyard is a trip unto itself.

Two excellent exibitions in this museum in the Hague. Max Liebermann, the German impressionist, and Art Nouveau in the Netherlands.
