It houses a varied collection and many changing exhibitions. We went to see the Max Liebermann exhibit at the Gemeentemuseum. Whatever the exhibit, the museum always takes great care in its display and always has an amazing collection of work of the artist. Same was true for the Max Liebermann exhibit. Lovely work of his and peers of the same era. The story was well told and the building itself is always a pleasure to the eye

I went to this museum for the first time in 2016 and returned again in 2017 as it had a special major exhibition on Mondriaan to tie in with the 100th anniversary of de Stijl.
The building designed by Dutch architect Berlage is impressive itself. It has the largest collection in the world of works by Mondriaan, and also other works by major representatives of de Stijl (Theo van Doesburg, Bart van der Leck and Gerrit Rietveld). But this is not all. This modern art museum has a large collection of other works of the applied arts, fashion, print, etc. It also holds a number of special exhibitions and you could easily spend a whole day there.
The museum cafe is nice for a coffee/lunch break when visiting, but could get very crowded.
Would check again what's on there next time I go to Holland.

Cafe not great compared to others I've been in in Dutch museums but it serves perfectly acceptable food. The building is stunning architecturally I think - very different. Collections are displayed well in separate rooms. The Mondrian and De Stijl exhibit was fascinating and a must. Its all a very pleasant change from many of the other museums that display more 'traditional' artwork.
Lockers are one euro and cloakroom provided as is usually the case in Holland.

This is nog a museum only worth visiting for the art they show, but also for the great building itself. It has been designed by the famous Dutch architect Berlage and it shows a really unique style, which you can also find in Amsterdam and other cities. You can find artwork of Mondriaan, Picasso, van Doesburg, Monet en Toorop, but beside that, changing exhibitions during the year. All the artwork is from beginning of the 20the century. Famous are pieces of different art streams: Haagse School, Symbolisme around 1900, De Stijl, Bauhaus and Expressionism.

This is one of the best museums in Amsterdam. There was plenty to see for us, art lovers, in this excellently laid out place: a mixture of work from modern dutch and international contemporary artists and a French art deco show. There is also a lovely cafe to break the day right in the center atrium and an excellent gift shop.
