Owner description: Museum Volkenkunde is a museum about people housed in a historic building just five minutes' walk from Leiden's central station. A huge totem pole greets visitors as they enter the museum through the garden. Museum Volkenkunde presents regularly changing exhibitions and its permanent display features objects from eight different cultural regions. Objects that all have a story to tell about humankind.

Fantastic collection, really well interpreted and an excellent cafe as well. Some brilliant films and stills in the galleries giving a vivid insight into life in different communities around the world. Could have spent a whole day there

The walk around city is very relaxing and beautiful. The museum is interesting o visit if you have a lot of free time as there are many sites that are walking distance. A lot quieter than Amsterdam and I much prefer Leiden

Been in Leiden several times, but in this museum for the first one and was surprised how great it is.
It is 10 rooms which shows you ten different civilizations/continents (from Africa to Oceania).
I was amazed how many good examples of some countries are there and some of them are really rear.
There is also a Buddha room, where you can just sit and relax.
The only negative thing is its cost. Standard ticket costs 14 euro. For students they have discount and the ticket costs 6 euros.
I highly recommend this museum. Everyone will get something from it and you will be surprised, when realised that already spend here two hours

I visited all the sections at the museum and I was amazed with the details and the amount of information. Also, the areas offer some interactive panels where you can read more about the pieces in Exibition. The area dedicated to Skandinavia was the one I most liked. Full of details and enriched with ornaments and pieces.
The staff is very friendly and helpful.
This is a must place to be visited in Leiden.
