The trams are easy to get around on,and plenty of them.Buy an unlimited pass on the tram from 24h to several days makes boarding so much easier and saves you money

I was wearing uncomfortable shoes on my visit--BAD IDEA. Without the trams my feet would have been ruined and I wouldn't have been able to get anywhere. I would definitely recommend the 1 or 3 day tram pass for your stay--worth the money.

We bought a OV-chipkaart (travel ticket) and used it throughout our trip (much like an Oyster card in London). It allows you to travel most places in the Netherlands on trains and the trams. You put money onto the card at the beginning and then use the card get into Amsterdam on the train and then on the trams throughout the day. You must remember to both check-on and check-off each time or there is then a penalty. There is a great app that you can put on your phone that helps in getting from place to place. Both the trains and the trams are frequent and fast - they avoid the traffic issues that some places in Amsterdam have. We kept the card and plan to use it on our next trip to go to Rotterdam.

One of the best services of the GVB (Municipal Transportation Company) are the very frequent free ferries that sail across the River IJ day and night ... amongst others to the Buiksloterweg with the beaming ADAM tower with the Lookout (the former Shell Research headquarters) and the Eye film museum ... and to the hip NDSM former shipyard area with its many restaurants and hotels. It is an experience in itself to take the ferry ride. Yes, the GVB makes you understand why the tourist tax is 4 percent in Amsterdam :-)

Soon also the subway will cross the river and take you to Amsterdam North from the Central Station.
