We recently visited Amsterdam to see a concert at the Paradiso. What a great venue! Love the fact that they have several bars on multiple levels. Great acoustics and the lounge in the basement was a great afterparty. Beers were €2.80. Cant wait to see another great band here in the future!

I arrived at 7.30pm and after spending 25 minutes in the main hall listening to Mild High Club and thinking that they are a bloody strange warm up act for the country band Midland, I squeezed past the people milling around at the bar and left through the back doors.

I climbed up a flight of stairs and then realized the Midland Gig was going to take place in a smaller back room on the 2nd floor.

This band in America are really big. They are headlining Day 3 of the Country Music festival at the O2 in London next week. That means a 15000 seat arena.

Here was a hot all-standing room that held about 300 people. The band and particularly the lead man Mark Wystrach, seemed to love it. The intimate atmosphere of actually smelling the audience was a change. The Beer in plastic cups and the increasing temperature added to the concert.

Mark was quite open with the stories of how he has spent the last 48 hours stoned and he spent most of the evening drinking beer. Not that I have anything, per-se wrong with this….but the big country people…..George Strait, Garth Brooks etc….tended to be hard workers and sober.

Midland did all the major hits off the "On the Rocks" Album and they played some other stuff too. The best of the lot was either the Springsteen Classic “Tougher than the Rest” from the Tunnel of Love Album, or the wonderful Dylan song “I shall be released”. When they started to freestyle, I personally didn’t particularly like it. They moved from Country to Southern rock and almost into Grunge at some point.

The wonderful harmonies that the 3 great voices achieve at times make them a pleasure to listen to. They should stick to what they are good at.

The 90 minute set was good. I would love to hear them in a bigger Arena, and it is a shame that they did not get the 1500 capacity bigger hall at the Paradiso. The 300 hall concert was a proper large Pub gig and I am pleased that I went.

I will continue to follow Midland and see where they end up.

The two Gigs ( main hall and upstairs room) finished almost simultaneously, and the bundle to get coats and just to get out of the building was serious. The organisers should really consider a better way of dealing with situations like this.

If I am in Amsterdam in the future, I will check out and see if anything is going on at the Paradiso before I go.

This place is awesome! Multiple floors and stages with huge acts coming through constantly. We watched a gig upstairs while MGMT was playing downstairs, the sound didn't bleed between rooms at all and there was more than enough space inside. It has that undeniable "cool" feeling you get from a proper music venue. Go see something here even if you don't know the band.

We got there while another concert was ending... the amount of people getting out was huge .... once we actually got to the venue our concert was showing it turned out to be a tiny space over packed low stage so all u could do is stand surrounded by people looking at their backs - couldn’t even move arm to drink the beer! So we just walked out - sound is great though. Took us 30 mins to get our jackets to leave - if u come u can get a locker better option than a cloak room .
