Don’t forget to visit Museum Het Schip (“The Ship”), a beautiful hidden jewel behind the Westerpark. The museum is established inside an appartment complex build between 1919-1921 in the Amsterdam School style, a style inspired by the Art Deco and Jugendstil and a reaction against industrialisation. The appartment complex was build for the working class, and even more specific for the socialist workers here in Amsterdam. The museum is small, but to compensate you can join a tour that is included in the ticket price. The guide will take you around the building and show you places that are otherwise closed for the general public, like an original post office and museum appartment with an original 1920s interior. If you are interested in architecture and the history of Amsterdam and want to visit a museum that is still unknown even to locals this is the place to be!

The museum also organizes tours in Amsterdam by foot, bike, bus and boat, as well as tours in the beautiful Amrath hotel and the Dageraad complex! Check out their website for a full description of all the tours and events they organize: hetschip.nl

After the queues for everything from getting in, to going to the toilet at the Reiksmuseum this museum was pure joy. We had an exclusive tour with an extremely knowledgeable and friendly guide of this building and the social history of Amsterdam. It helps if you are interested in architecture and the arts and crafts period..

Take a tram 10 out towards the west of Amsterdam, walk through Westerpark and you'll arrive at Het Schip, a fascinating area with examples of the Amsterdam School of architecture and a museum.

You do not need to be an academic to enjoy the history and articles of how this area of social housing developed, and the buildings are amazing and very different to see.

Work is apparently underway to enable this to be a world heritage site.

Our tour lasted an hour, and we walked with our guide, Charlotte, whose enthusiasm and knowledge made it a real treat.

A lot of thought has gone into Het Schip, and it is well worth the interesting tram ride to see.

The Amsterdam school of architecture is not particularly exciting or cutting edge to start with. Plus, as depicted in the museum, it was quite controversial. Further, the exhibits and the tour are pretty humdrum. I have seen some wonderful architecture museums around the world and this is not one of them. However, you do get some idea how the city developed over the years, specially in the south. It is a niche museum and out of the way. Not for every one.
