We traveled to Europe for 4 weeks and dinner at this restaurant was our best meal, hands down!
It was recommended to us by a friend who is a foodie born and raised in Amsterdam, she said this was her all time favorite and after visiting we can understand why. We arrived on a rainy evening and were warmly welcomed and seated at an adorable little table set off to the side that faced the window, sipping wine, eating this amazing food while watching the rain on the window was just enchanting. We had the 5 course meal which was just right for us and every dish was outstanding, veal cheek, asparagus, delicious and although the dinner was not cheap, felt it was reasonably priced and the service was excellent. Yes the restaurant is small but cozy, and truly a special place.

Took a punt on Gebr Hartering based on reviews. We were after a special fine dining treat and weren’t disappointed. This is a cosy place not at all cramped as suggested by previous review. Don’t recall myself or my wife feeling anything other than comfortable and pampered. The staff can overtalk things a little but you can take that in the spirit it is intended and crack on with a wry smile. This is haute cuisine after all. We had the 5 course menu, some of which is shared. The helpings are small but 5 courses leaves a healthy appetite well satisfied. All beautifully presented and for us the stars of the show were a delicious roasted cabbage with butter and a veal escalope with mash (sorry, potato purée). Great place for a special dining treat in an area which looks unexplored and urban just beyond Waterlooplein and the Rembrandthuis. The Hartering brothers know their stuff. Thought we’d be the only ones in the place but it was rammed. Book in advance.

First, the place is terribly cramped. Second, the five course meal that my wife and I purchased came out on one plate that we shared. The amounts were pathetically small and the courses were bland and uninspired. The main course was fatty and unenjoyably. The desert was a lump of vanilla ice cream with some fruit. What a disappointment!

A small 'boutique' restaurant with a small menu focusing on 5 and 7 course menus or there is a small a la carte menu option.

I had oysters and the 'fish of the day' which was monkfish with the wines for each suggested by Paul, one of the brothers who operate the restaurant.

The food, and wines, were superb. The location is next to a canal in a quite part of Amsterdam. While it happened to be close to where I was staying I will certainly hunt it down if I'm in Amsterdam again - it was that good.

Thanks brothers Hartering - wishing you great success into the future!

I met two girlfriends here, after getting a recommendation from a friend who lives in California. We were all delighted with the attentive service, cozy ambiance and picturesque location along a canal. Our fish was perfectly cooked and the wine that was selected for us was a great match. We went for the homemade ice cream for dessert, and it was absolutely fabulous! We will definitely be back!
