Hotel Matthiol is a very new boutique hotel which is gorgeous, luxurious, stylish, and well run in every respect. It is located in a very quiet location above the Winkelmatten area of Zermatt, about a 15 minute walk (or 10 minute bus ride or 7 minute $25 (!) electric taxi ride) from the center.

This is one hotel where the website and photos don’t oversell the property: it is every bit as gorgeous as it looks. The entry, bar, restaurant, spa (wow!) and rooms are just wonderful. The design is clean and stylish everywhere, with fireplaces, candles, and wonderful places to sit and read or visit everywhere. Because it is a small boutique hotel, there are never crowds of people, and yet it never appears deserted either; there were always other interesting guests to see or meet.

The spa and wellness center is included in the room price and is drop-dead gorgeous, with low mysterious lighting and candles everywhere. There was a large dry sauna (which was not hot enough-management needs to fix this, the rocks didn’t even sizzle with water), and two steam rooms, one of which was an amazing grotto appearing to be cut out of solid rock like a cave, which menthol scented steam and slowly changing subtle LED colored up-lights. Near the dry sauna was an outdoor whirlpool which was wonderful in the falling snow, although again, the water was not hot enough although turned to the highest setting, even in the early evening when it had been on all day.

The staff were outstanding-all of them. At all times they were helpful and wanted to do everything they could to ensure we had a nice stay. They also called restaurants for us (it is nearly impossible to get a same day reservation in Zermatt’s high season).

Breakfast buffet was fantastic in their gorgeous dining room. Very tasty and they also provide you with a hot item like omelette, pancake (oddly, just one single small pancake), in addition to the buffet. The coffee machine is a particular delight, automatically making all sorts of coffees and all of them delicious. If you love coffee, you can have all the excellent coffee you want without always searching for a waiter!

Finally the room. We selected a spa room with Matterhorn view, and I assumed it would be like most hotels where you can see the view if you lean out the window and strain to see. No. It was simply spectacular. The Matterhorn dominates the view from the entire room, from the large tub by the bed (seems strange but romantic!) to the spa area at the other end. And yes it was like a full spa. One room was a two seat dry sauna, which worked brilliantly and takes just 30 minutes to heat up, and the other room was a wonderful steam shower. Both featured LED lighting and music (music wasn’t working as they explained when they brought us into the room). In addition there was a bathroom with two sinks and a separate toilet, with a smoked glass door to the bathroom that was almost soundproof to the room.

And the balcony was also wonderful. It was deep and probably 15 feet long, with two chairs and a table, and a view of the Matterhorn that was almost pristine; only one other building (a nice small chalet/condo I think) is visible between you and the Matterhorn; but it is shorter and does not interrupt the view. Below us was the “front yard” of the hotel, which featured four small “fondue igloos”; which are charming single table plastic domes just outside the restaurant, where you can book a romantic meal surrounded by snow. We didn’t eat in an igloo, but it looked wonderful and is usually booked each night.

I’m not sure I’ve ever experienced a nicer hotel experience. It was expensive but worth it. Highway compliments to owner and manager of the hotel for the outstanding experience they offer.

I and my son stayed for 4 nights and we enjoyed every single minute of it. The whole atmosphere is very cosy and relaxing while offering high class service. Not too much, certainly not too little, just perfect. What we liked? The breakfast, the Spa, the bar, the people, service and dinner. The rooms and decorations are very nice throughout the hotel. Bus service to Zermatt and sky stations is very nearby but you don’t get disturbed by the nightlife crowds! We loved it!!!

This is really like a 4.75, the hotel is nice, boutique with a good breakfast and clean rooms. Champagne for mimosas/prosecco at the buffet, which i always appreciate! The balcony views did not disappoint! It is a little walk to the town center but easily done, and lovely. Cabs were easy to get if you didn’t want to walk. Staff was friendly, but you often had to look for the front desk staff, which to me was a little odd. And the room was nice, we had the Matterhorn spa double which was lovely but the only shower is the steam shower and there were no lights! Room needed better lighting. The shuttle service to and from the train station was key! Overall a lovely stay.

Just got back from a week long honeymoon at Matthiol and overall we were somewhat happy with our stay. Below are our reviews on each category that we felt needed to be put out there.

Room: We looked at the pictures of the rooms on the website and saw the wood beam ceilings, spacious rooms, etc. We ended up booking the Matterhorn Spa Double Room which shows a soaking tub directly in front of a window which overlooks the matterhorn. We had to book a smaller less expensive room for our first night there since the room we wanted wasn't available. We were moved to the room mentioned above on the second day. We were told someone would help us with our bags, however we had to bring our bags down to the front desk and they held them there for us. When we got back to the hotel that day we arrived to our new room, opened the door only to find no wood beam ceilings, no tub directly front of the window (tub set back from the window in front of the bed) and the room seemed a bit smaller than the pictures shown for this room on the website. We went down to the front desk and asked if we got the room we paid for. The girl at the front desk confirmed we got the room we paid for and that we maybe only looked at the first few pictures which shows the rooms on the top floor (only top floor rooms have exposed wood beams), we were on the 1st of 3 floors. My wife and I both felt that this was a bit of false advertising. I thought maybe I missed other pictures on the website, but sure enough there were no pictures on the website that showed white painted non wood beam exposed ceilings (for any of the categories of rooms). Not what we were picturing for our honeymoon, but oh well we were in Zermatt and will make the best of it. I feel as though they should charge more for the top floor rooms and make it a separate category. Another thing to note is that the the light fixtures in the room were very dusty, looked like they hadn't been dusted in months. On the first night I knocked a champagne glass off the rotating tv table and had someone come in to clean the glass bits off the floor. Three girls showed up to clean it, but there were still glass shards on the floor, as well as a champagne splash stain on the wood floor. Overall, the room was just okay, but I wouldn't have paid the premium for the "best" room if we knew we weren't getting the best room on the top floor.

Food: The breakfast is very good. They had fresh bread and meats laid out every morning. Also had multiple cereals, fruit, and juices. If you want an egg of any style or a pancake you order that on the spot at no extra charge. Breakfast is included in your room rate. We also booked the Fondue Igloo one night and that was fantastic. The charcuterie board was absolutely delicious and the fondue just as good, a very cool experience. Room service on the other hand was an absolute mess. First off, they charge a 15CHF charge just to place an order. My wife and I ordered the two beef sandwiches which cheese and fries. After ordering a lady informed us that it would be awhile since the restaurant downstairs was busy, we affirmed that was fine. Ten minutes later we got a knock on the door with one sandwich on a very small slate board and the french fries. No napkins were brought up and the slate board would've been impossible to eat off of without getting crumbs everywhere. Also, the one sandwich didn't have cheese on it. We let them know that we didn't get what we ordered so we brought the sandwich back down and asked for cheese. They then brought one sandwich back up with cheese. I had to go back down and ask for a couple of plates which they use at breakfast and some napkins. They never offered to give us new fries since they were now cold from waiting on the other sandwich and the new sandwich to be brought up. I had suggested that they remove the 15CHF service charge and she agreed she would remove it. Still, that doesn't make up for the crap show of the whole experience. Another thing to note is that room service isn't available around the clock so if you're hungry after 10pm or between 11am and 7pm you are out of luck and will need to make the trek out to find food. We went to Waldhaus just down from the Wiche bus stop. It was delicious!

Location: Quite a walk away from town, however there is a bus about a 5 minute walk from the hotel, but doesn't run very late. If you ever want to enjoy the night life you will have to either walk back up the hill to the hotel from town (25-30 minutes) or take a 5 minute taxi ride which costs 27CHF. We walked most of the time. We were happy to be able to ski back to the hotel via Moos trail. You can find this at the first stop on the Riffelberg Express down from Furi. Get off the gondola and take a left and walk up the hill. Here you will find a fun Apres bar called The Harley Bar (the last stop). We had drinks here before we would make our way back down to the hotel. From this bar it's about a 10 minute ride down. It's a bit confusing to get to the hotel, but I'll try to explain as best as I can since no one at the hotel explained it to us. From the harley bar go straight then stay left. you will then get to an open field with some chalets, from here you can go left to Zermatt or right to stay on the trail to get to Matthiol. This small section of trail can have vehicles on them so be careful. From here just go straight and you will recognize where you are with the hotel on the left.

Service: The waitresses and one male waiter we had at breakfast were all very pleasant. The girl we dealt with when asking about our room was not so pleasant, I believe her name was Nadine. In the days after we questioned our room she would not look at or even talk to us unless we talked to her first. First hotel I've ever been to where all the employees don't smile and say hello, ask how you're doing, etc. That was the only bad experience in dealing with the staff. Also, the cleaning crew did not take glasses, mugs of coffee, empty beer bottles from our room while we were gone during the day. A bit of an odd thing as clearly we were finished with them.

Overall, we had a pleasant time here. The town of Zermatt was beautiful and the skiing amazing. Would I stay here again or recommend it to anyone? Definitely not. There are other much better options that I'd be willing to pay a small premium for.

Room Tip: Make sure to ask for a top floor room.

Dear Lindsay

Thank you for your feedback regarding your stay at our hotel.

Kindly note that the pictures on the internet give an overview of the included amenities in the room. Also, you can find pictures of rooms that are not under the roof on our website.
All our Matterhorn Spa double rooms have a bathtub in front of the window (with view to the Matterhorn) and they also have the same size as they are all located above each other.
We also do not want to make another category out of the top floor as they include exactly the same (sauna, steambath, bathtub and balcony) as the other Matterhorn Spa double rooms so it would not be fair to charge the guests only because they have a wooden ceiling instead of a white one.

We would like to apologise that nobody brought your bags down as you are right and this is part of our service.

The problem with lights and all other electrical devices is that they attract dust so it is difficult that they are always shiny but be assured that we clean the dust in all our rooms.
I would also like to apologise that the housekeeping did not clean all the glass off the floor but if you would have informed us, we could have sent someone immediately to check it again and clean it properly.

For the room service, we charge CHF 15.00 as someone of the service staff needs to leave the restaurant to bring the food up and therefore cannot serve the guests in the restaurant for this time.
But we are sorry for the misunderstanding with the cheese on top of the sandwich. This may have happened because we normally do not have cheese on the sandwich and there may have been a miscommunication between the person taking the order and the kitchen staff.
Also, we are not a 5 star hotel so there is no 24 hour room service available. Our kitchen closes at 10pm and you were informed about this on check in as we inform all our guests about this fact.

For the slope coming down to the hotel, our staff always explains the guests that the number of the slope is number 43. All slopes are marked and there is only one of them coming down to the hotel, so it is not as difficult to find as you have described.

I will of course check the matter about the staff not greeting you as we usually greet all our guests when they pass reception area or the restaurant. This is not part of our service but it is hard for me to believe that all my staff ignored you during your stay.

Also, it is always easier for usto take care of these things if you come and ask for me or someone else of the staff as I could have arranged a lot of things you criticise now during your stay.

Best regards from Zermatt

This is a beautiful, “mountain modern” chalet with excellent service! We had a very good sized room with plenty of storage to completely unpack 2 people. Our room had our own sauna AND steam shower with a bathtub for 2 overlooking the mountain snow. Ultimate luxuries after a long day of skiing! A hearty breakfast is included and we both LOVED that self-serve coffee/espresso/cappuccino machine! A 10 minute walk from the main gondola was perfectly convenient. It’s a 30 minute walk into town (or quick cab ride) but worth the quiet and solitude of being on the edge of town. We will be back! Thank you to the staff for always friendly service!
