Didn’t make it to the top because we found out the hard way that the Swiss pass doesn’t cover this anymore. Maybe the Tell Pass does but I am not sure. I am sure it would be worth for those who can afford it. We used our Swiss pass to get to Mt. Rigi. Which is a must.

Take the time to visit this site. It was the WOW factor of our very brief visit to Switzerland. From Basel to Lucern it is a very easy 1 hr train ride r/t €102. The trip around the lake and up the Mount was beautiful. We had perfect weather don’t miss this opportunity. Don’t eat at the restaurant on top of the mountain. Very over priced for mediocre food.

Take the gonodola to the top then take the cogwheel down and boat back to city. The view is spectacular from the top, 7000 feet up.
There is a restaurant and gift shop and a couple hotels.

Spent 5+ hours taking the boat to Alpnachstadt (the lake is stunningly beautiful on a fine summer day), the cogwheel train up the mountain (quite an experience), having lunch (good for a cafeteria but typically expensive), walking about on the various short trails (the best is quite level), and taking the gondola and cable car down the other side to catch the bus back to Lucerne. All together a great day.

We took the cog railway (steepest in the world @ 48 degrees) up to the top for a walk around the trail that circles the peak, but the clouds rolled in and the view got limited. The cog trains were disappointing as I had expected an engine pushing the carriages, but it really didn't look any different from any of the other funiculars we had been on. In addition, we only paid 1/2 price due to our Swiss Travel Pass (highly recommend) but even that was 36 CHF each.
