“Magical and unforgettable.”

We touched down in Bologna Airport in the late afternoon and the outside temperature registered as 34 degrees on the dashboard of the car we had hired. I thanked the good Lord for air-conditioning and set off on “the wrong side of the road” for our 250km journey to Palazzo Scagliae.
Five hours later we arrived in Mocaiana, a tiny village within a couple of miles of the castle. This is where we had arranged to meet the owners, Renno and Andreina. We like them immediately! They were very warm and welcoming and when we said that we had not eaten or managed to get any supplies for the next day they took as to a small bar and made sure that we got a meal and provisions for the morning. Because it was so late Renno gave us a quick introduction to the Palazzo and promised to be back at 9.00am to show us around the following day. My wife and I and our 2 girls fell asleep instantly and the beds were superb.
Waking in the morning was a little surreal. Above us was a high ceiling with huge wooden beams and stone tiles and a wrought iron chandelier hung above us. There was sunlight streaming in through one of the heavy iron framed windows on to the stone floor and the sound of the birds and crickets outside along with the faint tinkle of cow-bells further down the valley was all we could hear. No aeroplanes, no traffic, no people…
We went down the beautifully made circular staircase to the old kitchen, complete with a fireplace the size of a single bed. A wild boar looked down on us from high on the wall and between him and the fireplace you could see the number 1168 etched into the stonework.
We had a quick breakfast and then set off to explore the castle and it’s surroundings.
You could tell instantly that the restoration had been a labour of love for Renno and Andreina. The attention to detail and care is very apparent and there is a beautiful and tasteful mix of old and contemporary throughout the whole estate.
The interior is simply beautiful and authentic and I personally had a sense of instant calm. It normally takes me 3 or 4 days to unwind on holiday but it happened on day 1 this time.
The exterior of the building and the surrounding grounds are just as stunning. Being 2,500 feet up you can view the entire surroundings, from the lights of Mocaiana and Gubbio to the distant mountain ranges and everything in between.
The grounds contain fruit trees and other large conifers, mostly the trademark Poplars that are so definitive of the Umbria and Tuscany regions. A large barbecue and huge stone pizza oven are available for parties al fresco and if things get too hot there is a good sized hot tub to cool off in.
The property is very secure, as you would expect, as it is a castle but even so, the floodlit gardens and the electric gates give a very reassuring sense of security.
We were also adopted by Pepita, who we all fell in love with. A gentle and insanely happy dog who greeted us at the gate of the castle every time we came home.
She made sure that any wildlife that got too close was seen off and she accompanied me on a couple of runs to make sure I didn’t get lost
There are many beautiful places to visit in Umbria with several of the hill-top towns within an hours drive…Assisi, Gubbio, Perugia and the caves at Frasassi were breath-taking.
We spent 10 nights in the castle and had it not been for the fact that we felt compelled to get our children out to experience the culture we could have happily stayed in our hill-top castle for the entire duration of the trip.
I have many outstanding memories of our time here but one that stands out is the night there was a rather biblical thunderstorm! It was still very warm at midnight so one of the arched windows was open and the position of it meant that the howling wind did not enter the room but it was still beautifully powerful and a bit intimidating. From our bed we could see the lightning bolts cracking through the sky and filling the night with an amazing cobalt blue light. And then the moon appeared, framed by the window. We watched as it traced an arc right in front of us, back lit by dramatic clouds and blue lightning and with an accompanying sound track of near gale force winds. Absolutely magical!
If you have any sense of drama, romance or fantasy or just have a desire to try something out of the ordinary…go to the Palazzo Scagliae.

“Beautifully restored medieval castle”

My plan was a secluded, romantic getaway in the countywide of Umbria and that is what Palazzo Scagliae delivered!. The 13th century building has been carefully restored and you get the feeling that you have travelled back in time when you stay there. Situated on a hill with beautiful views over forested hills and valleys and very few neighbours there is peace and quiet and relaxation to be had. And yet you are only a 15 minute drive to Gubbio with its beautifully preserved medieval buildings and churches as well as Perugia and Assisi. The house is lavishly decorated and the kitchen is well stocked. The 13 acres of the grounds are well maintained and suitable for hosting weddings and larger groups. We can thoroughly recommend the Palazzo and would love to stay there again!

“I'm so glad we chose Palazzo Scagliae!”
Reviewed 16 November 2014 for a stay in October 2014

We experienced Palazzo Scagliae for a week in October. What a pleasant experience! Lovingly restored by Nello and Andreina, its owners, we felt taken back in time but with all of the luxuries and comforts of 2014! Every little thing was thought of. We felt so comfortable. I highly recommend this for family, friends, or groups traveling together. Private with a lot of space but close to so many of the hilltop towns throughout Umbria and Tuscany. Highly recommend...you won't be disappointed!

Palazzo scagliae is a wonderfully historic, very comfortable and quiet, refuge located in the hills outside Gubbio. The owners are very friendly and accomodating. The grounds are beautiful. Gubbio is a short drive and is a charming small town. Good place to take side trips to Assisi, Spello, Orvieto even Florence.

“Molto Belissimo Il Palazzo Scagliae”
Reviewed 18 November 2013 for a stay in October 2013

This property is an amazing place to stay in Gubbio and for Italy in general. It is a wonderfully restored building of magnificent proportions executed by the owners Andriena and Nello. They are such wonderful people full of life and very welcoming. This castle has a history of the Kinights Templar with their cross over the main entrance. All of the rooms are well appointed. We especially loved the large kitchen with its huge wood burning fireplace which we used every evening. The owners had the kitchen stocked with all the basic items needed to get one started. All you needed was to do your grocery shopping and cook great meals in the evening. The views were astounding being on top of the mountain but close to the town of Gubbio. I would highly recommend this Palazzo.
