This museum is small enough to go through thoroughly in an hour. All signs are in Italian, so I probably should have got the English audio headphones. The tiny animal sculptures and jewelry from the Etruscan period feature such contemporary simple shapes--still very appealing. And who knew that the Etruscans had safety pins for fastening their garments?

Lovely old villa set in mature nice parkland. The rooms are opulent and each with a very interesting and varied collection of art ranging from Impressionism to Modernism. Helpful and interesting guides. So under publicised perhaps because of proximity to Pisa & Florence. Only 4 euro entry

A real "hidden gem".

We were blown away by this wonderful villa and gallery. It was one of the most stunning villas we have ever visited. Only regret is that photography was not allowed anywhere inside and the attendants kept a close eye on us to make sure we didn't try to take any.

Looking somewhat ordinary on the outside and sitting in a rather neglected communal park area, the villa interior is a huge surprise when you step inside with each room more fabulous than the last. The staircase is also very special.

Although there were many beautiful and/or interesting artworks on display, the fabulous frescoes by Gatti added beautifully to the stunning interiors of the villa. Even if you have little or no interest in art, the interiors alone are worth the visit.

I would recommend anyone to visit here and to allow a couple of hours.

Our biggest difficulty was finding it as it was not signposted and sitting in a park which had no obvious entrance. A very nice local gentleman gave up trying to direct us and simply signalled us to follow him around several small streets and through the park until he delivered us to the front door. What a kind man he was to go out of his way to such an extent. Perhaps that explains why we were the only visitors at that time.

Entry was free with a Livorno Card.

Thei museum houses the best painting collection existing of the Macchiaioli painting current which is the major italian one of the late 1800's and beginning 1900's. Giovanni Fattori the master of such school, loved to paint animals ( horses, cows etc) in their various applications ( horses at war, oxens at work in the fields etc
