This construction is extraordinary not only because it size, high and location but also because its materials and arquitecture challenges the builders faced mire than 500 years ago. Recommendation... It worth to make a little research about the Doumo's history, mecenas and time when it was built.

We went to the Duomo several times over several days at different times. Each time the line was way around the back of the building and moving slowly. The line was out in the open in hot sun. I have a medical condition that limits the amount of sun exposure. We gave up every time. We were told the inside wasn't very impressive but we would have liked to see it. Additionally, the opening times are restrictive, apparently 10:00am to about 4:45 pm. Not much for the fourth largest church in the world. We couldn't find out the exact open times, very mysterious. We read that church officials limit the number of people at any one time because of the noise. Then expand the visiting times. Or control the noise by other means. Or charge a small entrance fee to pay for more help. Or tolerate the noise, other churches seem to manage. After all, its a huge church.

It is definitely worth it to climb the dome. It's vast inside and takes a long time to climb then wander corridors, then pop out in the basilica, then wind around to more tight steps and eventually come out the top with beautiful views. The duomo requires a time, so book a ticket for the cathedral and choose a time for the dome. There is supposedly a pants requirement for the cathedral, though so many men in line were wearing shorts. There is no dress code to climb the dome.

Much more beautiful from the outside, then from inside(a bit empty). Didn’t do the dome-tour. Sold out 4 days in advance. Guides will sell it for 40€ instead of 18 € for 5-6 museums

YOU WILL NEED TO QUEUE! There is no avoiding the queue unfortunately. It opens at 10am and we started queuing at 9:15 by which time the queue was already quite lengthy. By 10am, the queue was already going round the back of the cathedral so you need to plan accordingly. Once you are inside though it was worth the wait. You will need to pay extra for the Bell tower and the crypt.
