Wohnung im Herzen Palermos
Super Unterkunft, supernette Gastgeber. Ferienwohnung mit allem was man braucht. Zentral gelegen, um Palermo zu erkunden. Dabei helfen auch die Insider-Tipps der Gastgeber.

A little corner of history
The Kalsa area - in which the apartment is situated - still carries some of its unbandaged scars from WWII. Until a few years ago it was pretty much a no go area for tourists- but those days have gone. If you want a little slice of Palermo, this is the place. If you are looking for glamour- don’t bother. The plusses: great communication with Pietro, warm welcome from Rafaella, the apartment was well equipped and warm, there was easy access to the station and the main tourist sites, and we were close to shops and restaurants. Oh - and good wifi. The minuses. While the neighbourhood is quiet enough, any noise carries, and the various neighbourly comings and goings late at night woke us a few times.

characterful flat in characterful area
The flat is in the old 'Kalsa' part of Palermo, characterised by some derelict old palazzi and buildings but also now some refurbished ones, as well as a series of historic buildings and museums open to the public. Nearby is a range of good and inexpensive restaurants and bars serving typical Palermitan food, as well as a great greengrocers, bread and grocery shops - and a Carrefour quite close if you want such a place. The flat is comfortable with a mezzanine/first floor sleeping area, and looked after very well by the owner and other helpers.

Good location, nice apartment
My husband and I stayed in this apartment for one month and overall were very satisfied. We liked the location, which is in the old part of Palermo called the Kalsa district. We could walk to the grocery store, the train station, a great bakery, a very good café, etc. Several tourist spots are close by. The apartment is well equipped, but could use a few more electrical plugs. The big bed in the loft was very comfortable. The only drawback for older people might be the number of steps to get up to the apartment (42), and the number of steps to the loft (15 or so).

Molto accogliente nel cuore della Kalsa
L'appartamento è proprio come nelle foto!

Location, location, location!
If you truly want to experience the Sicilian way of life this is definitively the PERFECT place! My husband and I rented this apartment for 3 months as a home base to explore Palermo and Sicily. The location was awesome – the area is charming and fascinating and within walking distance of all the major sights and markets. The apartment had everything we needed to feel at home - besides the (obvious) décor, furnishings and the comfy bed, there was loads of storage space, lots of coat hangers, a full sized fridge, and a drying rack for laundry ( those little touches can make such a difference to your comfort level!) The neighborhood felt very safe and it was so much fun to shop at the street markets and be able to cook our own meals. There are lots of restaurants and bars nearby for the lazy days, and we had lots of those! Pietro and his wife went out of their way to help us, we are so grateful to them and we will never forget their kindness.

Having Joy and Norman in our apartment for three months it was a real pleasure. Each owner would like to have hosts as Joy and Norman. Simona and I will remember their politeness, their kindness and their respect for our apartment and for neighbourhood. When they lived our house even for short periods they didn’t miss to communicate it to us. And once come back they told with enthusiasm what they had visited around our beautiful Sicily. We’ll hope to have them again in our holiday rental. Pietro & Simona

About the neighbourhood
Our holidays apartment is located in a Palermo’s Arabic quarter, built close to the sea in an era of people’s riots, in order to allow the Emir to escape in the event of revolt. It was named “al-halisah” that means “the elected one” in Arabic. Today it is a working-class area of the city, extremely picturesque, where it is still possible to capture a feel of the ancient Arabic-Sicilian culture and often smell the strong aromas of the food that is prepared in the several kiosks along the streets. The center of the Kalsa quarter is the square which carries the same name. The sixteenth-century gateway, Porta dei Greci, also known as Porta d’Africa, from where it is possible to glimpse the sea, is a sight worth visiting. Visit the historical city center just walking all around out apartment. Our suggestions. What in the morning? Start your itinerary in the heart of the old city center, at Quattro Canti, a square that has four magnificent eighteenth-century palaces with convex façades looking down onto it. From there you can walk to Piazza Pretoria where you can see the famous fountain and the Municipal building. From here go on to Via Vittorio Emanuele and by bus or walking go to the Cathedral Square. After admiring this splendid piece of architecture and the treasures kept inside it, go on to (by bus or taxi) the majestic Palazzo dei Normanni and another time dedicate your attention to the Cappella Palatina, one of the most beautiful churches in the world. When time for lunch arrives, have a rest and choose one of the restaurants in Palermo in this area. Try some local Palermo dish, such as 'pasta con le sarde', and then try some 'caponata' and finish off with a swordfish and mint roulade. What in the afternoon? Dedicate this part of the day to discovering Arabic Palermo, mostly concentrated in our quarter, the Kalsa. The true heart of the Kalsa is the square that carries the same name, surrounded by splendid buildings such as Palazzo Abatellis and Palazzo Torremuzza and Palazzo Mirto. But don't forget to visit the wonderful Museo delle Marionette that is nearby, near Piazza Santo Spirito, that you can walk to from Palazzo Abatellis. What in the evening. An exotic cocktail in an Arabic-style wine bar, a fresh fish-based dinner washed down with good Sicilian wine, a romantic walk along the seafront (see our photo gallery) or a charming dip in the nightly atmosphere of a concert played in the Spasimo, in his large nave open to the sky and his large side chapels in Northern Gothic style. And then a well-earned rest in our nice, cozy, comfortable holiday apartment in Palermo to recover your tired legs.
