Wife and I were last in Verona in 2006 so decided we should have another visit here, so we came for 5 nights.

Verona is a medium sized town and the centro storico quite large so it deserves more than a day's visit in our opinion. There are many historical buildings to explore and admire and they are reasonably spread out so a few days here is advisable if you wish to see most of the recommended sites.

Verona is also an excellent place for day trips by train. We spent a day each in Mantua and Padua and both were well worth the visit. Lake Garda, Vicenza and Venice are also doable but why anyone would want to spend less than a week in Venice beats me!

The city center is quite pedestrian friendly and is filled with the usual assortment of restaurants, shops and historical attractions. Being a larger city, the centro storico has a different feel compared to some smaller towns. I'm beginning to lean towards the more quaint and intimate settings of the small towns.

Luckily we had a qualified guide to show us round. We saw all the important places and very beautiful it all was and it would have been much better if it hadn’t been so crowded. We had to almost force our way through the crowds and were jostled all the time. Particularly crowded was the courtyard containing Juliet’s balcony. Ridiculous to hear lots of people thought it was a true story and her real balcony! The squares were impressive and one even had a market when we were there, unfortunately full of tourist tat! But still lovely. Definitely worth a visit and would recommend a qualified guide to get the most out of this stunning city.
